A moment of silence for Phil Cavaretta, who
died last week:
Quote:The first baseman and outfielder, who was the National League's Most Valuable Player and led the Cubs to their last World Series appearance in 1945, played his final 77 games for the White Sox an unidentified team.
Cavarretta holds the Cubs' record for single-season batting average by a left-handed hitter at .355 in his MVP season. He ranks in the top 10 in most offensive categories for the Cubs.
And this interesting tidbit:
Quote:He was believed to have been the last living person to have played against Babe Ruth, in 1935.
Not sure when he would have faced Ruth, since they played in different leagues. Maybe in spring training. He was, however, probably the last person who
played in three world series for the Cubs -- a feat that likely will never be repeated, if next season's team is any indication.
