fan base is an interesting concept here in the depressed midwest...

and $21 million a year is unfathomable from where I sit.

I think Baseball is going to price itself out of its role as Americas sport.

I cannot afford to go to a MLB game any longer.

I doubt I am alone in this predicament.

When is the economy going to hit the sports world, I wonder...

@Rockhead,

i try not to think about the obscene amount of $$ that changes hands in baseball.
the minimum salary this year was $400,000...

we treat ourselves to one game a year -- nice seats.
costs a pretty penny, which is why we only go once a year...

A sad day in cubby land...

"The service drew several hundred people, including Billy Williams, Ernie Banks, Ryne Sandberg, Ferguson Jenkins, Randy Hundley, Ryan Dempster, Ted Lilly and Jesse Jackson Sr.

Santo’s casket was carried solemnly outside and the procession headed north on Michigan Avenue as fans and well-wishers gathered on the sidewalks. Many applauded as the procession passed by Wrigley Field.

“He inspired other people to play their best, do their best,” said Banks, a Hall of Famer Banks who was one of the pallbearers.

A nine-time all-star in his 15-year career, Santo hit .277 with 2,254 hits, 342 home runs and 1,331 runs batted in. He also won the Gold Glove award five times despite playing with diabetes."

Shocked

Quote:
Sources: Cliff Lee to return to Phillies

The numbers had been crunched and all the scenarios exhausted Monday night when Cliff Lee finally made his decision.

He picked up the phone, thanked Rangers general manager Jon Daniels for his time in Texas and revealed he was signing with the Philadelphia Phillies. Agent Darek Braunecker simultaneously delivered the news to New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman. And just like that, Lee was back where he felt he belonged.

The most intriguing negotiation of the hot stove season came to a stunning conclusion late Monday when Lee, 32, spurned bigger offers from the Yankees and Rangers and agreed to a five-year, guaranteed $120 million contract with the Phillies, sources said. The deal includes an "easily reachable" vesting option for a sixth year, a source said, and most likely will ensure that Lee finishes his career in a Philadelphia uniform.

@Region Philbis,
wow...

whodathunkit...

"Lee’s wife felt insulted by fans at Yankee Stadium who were rude to her and Rangers family members during the ALCS. It was unclear whether that played a part in the decision."

I think this makes Boston the front runner now in the east. and to lose to the Phillies in the WS.

(they still need a catcher that hits.)

@Rockhead,

they got the pitching all right... but who's gonna play right?

tek's gonna teach salty everything he knows, and the run prevention will make up for the lack of bat from the catcher position...

BREAKING NEWS

Philly has just signed LeBron James, who is expected to start in right field on opening day.

Also, the team has introduced a new home uniform, which features an erect penis and middle finger as the double-L in "Phillies."

Finally, everyone ******* hates the Phillies.

@Gargamel,
Hey pitcherhead, all Philly loves Cliffy until he fucks up. Thats the way we play in Philly.
The local fanboy shows broke the negotiations a couple days ago and the polled results were highly in favor to bring Cliffy back.
Doc wants just 1 dollar more per year than Cliffy. Thats how they keep score.
