SHUD THE SHIP's CAPTAIN BE RANSOMED FROM PIRATES ?

I opine in the negative,
because it rewards them for their atrocious misconduct
and because it grants them financial encouragement them to recidivate
and indeed promotes new entry of competition
in this burgeoning industry.

I HOPE that this will teach mariners the wisdom
of being better armed than the pirates.

The correct answer is no, for the reasons you provided.

@OmSigDAVID,
Agree with tico.

However, how can his life be protected and still capture the kidnappers?

I see Obama has yet to comment.

Maybe he has a secret plan.

@OmSigDAVID,
Wouldn't that teach pirates the wisdom of being better armed than the mariners?

Yes

I don 't believe that is tactically possible; his life probably cannot
be protected during an attack on the pirates.
There is a chance that, with a lot of luck,
he might survive an attack on the pirates.
Sometimes hostages have survived.

If it were my decision,
I 'd order the Secretary of the Navy
to have a massive show of force
surrounding them with overwhelming naval power
then inform the pirates that thay will ALL be killed
and buried with PORKCHOPS n bacon grease, unless
the Captain is returned intact forthwith, in default whereof:
have the Seals attack and kill the pirates, publicly bury them with porkchops
and make their best effort to save the Captain alive.

Maybe SHOW them the porkchops, as a demonstration of good faith.

@OmSigDAVID,
Thats brilliant, now you want a token war with Islam. Pay the ransom and deal with it like Jefferson did with the Barbary Pirates, (except with very fast, heavily armed cigarrette boats deployed from a massive tender). Once our own are out of harms way, send in the attack forces in agreement with several other nations like China .

A couple of 5 inch rifles could take out a "mother ship" . They cannot continue roaming deeper waters without a support vessel.

The priority here should be the life and safety of Capt. Richard Phillips.

If we handle this improperly, shortsightedly,
we condemn many more American mariners to follow in his footsteps.

Youre thinking of the Bayberry Pirates, Im talking about the Barbary Pirates. We paid the ransom, then we exercised our strong Philly designed ship a bit.

I'd pay up. They'll spend it all on Coca-Cola and Camels anyway.

So, then, your solution is to be helpless? Being able to defend oneself seems illogical to you?

No. this is exactly like when insurance companies pay claims that they know to be fraud because it is cheaper in the short term to play along. In the long term it is in no ones interest.

@hawkeye10,
In most cases it is the insurance Carriers that dictate the conditions on the ship. On tankers , they allow no weaponry that could endanger the cargo of oil. The mariners have not signed onto a "no negotiations " pact when they sign on. The next step will be when a cruise ship is commandeered.
Pay now, kill later.

Something that W shoud have done is to remind Laden
n his religious henchmen that WE KNOW WHERE THAY LIVE,
in terms of their religion, which is based on geografy
that thay might have trouble concealing. W coud have n shoud have
told them that another attack woud move us to consider
what retribution shoud be visited upon Mecca or Medina; maybe a few other places.

Think in terms of glowing in the dark.

How woud Ladin account to Allah for their loss?
