Yankee fans need to get real. Raaahgerrr is the biggest head-hunter on the planet. Perdo threw at Garcia, no doubt, but it's part of the game.

Zimmer barrelling out of the dugout in a hissy fit and throwing a left hook at Pedro is NOT part of the game. Neither is Nelson's attack on a Sox fan in the bullpen simply for cheering on his team.

And there is no doubt Pedro will rise to the occasion if needed for game seven.

So that's it. Oh, one more thing, YANKEES S$CK, always have, always will.

No argument there, angie. Hey, I've been hating the Yankees since 1957--no lie! And I'm from NY...

Unh unh. In '57, when I was a wee lad, the Braves beat the Yankees in the World Series. They played all the games during the day then (believe it or not) so I was able to watch 'em. I already hated the Yankees, so I decided to root for the Braves. And I've done so ever since!

D'art said, "Roberta: It's OK to root for the Yankees here. I'm a Braves fan, and everyone is nice to me (well, sort of)..." Reread this thread, D'art, and see how welcome I feel.

Angie said, "Yankee fans need to get real." I'm plenty real, Angie.

I wrote a long post, then deleted it. What's the point? I don't hate any team.

Oh, Roberta. I'll root wit cha. A bunch of the Yankees used to play with the Mariners, anyway. (Got any batteries???)

So what does everybody think about the Cub fan? Mr.P watched it on the tv while I was out and has had me rushing to see every replay since. He said the fan was escorted out of the stadium by eight security guys and he was really in danger. Do you think that's true?

IF one mistake like that can let the team fall apart in the rest of the inning (Eight Runs??), then are they really World Series material? Full apologies to any Cubs fans but... there it is.

Cubs fan. Mad Cubs fan. (What was that guy thinking??) I bet he was really in danger, actually. Not saying that reflects well on Cubs fans, but I believe it. People are really emotional about this, the whole town pretty much, not just die-hard fans.

The Cubs have been streaky -- sum is greater than the whole of their parts. (Er...) I can see how that would throw 'em for a loop.

Still have one more chance, though. (Fingers crossed.)

Everybody's talking about it... but the Cubs still have tonight to turn it around.

Quote:
To add to the hurt, that fan who kept Alou from catching the ball hit by Luis Castillo and kept the rally going was wearing a Cubs hat. Once the Marlins broke loose, people around the 26-year-old fan starting hurling beers in his direction and he was escorted out by security with a jacket over his face.

"You cost us the World Series!" one fan yelled at him.

Said Alou: "Hopefully, he won't have to regret it for the rest of his life."

Now, it comes down to tonight. Ace Kerry Wood will pitch for Chicago, while the Marlins will go with Mark Redman.

"It has nothing to do with the curse," Cubs manager Dusty Baker insisted after the game. "It has to do with fan interference and a very uncharacteristic error by Gonzalez. History has nothing to do with this game, nothing."

This was the fateful moment:

Roberta,

When I said "Yankees fans need to get real", I meant get real about the Zimmer/Pedro thing. That's all.

We're all just having a kind of perverse fun here. You know that, right ?

Blatham says fbaezer means "He who administers soothing unguents into heated discussions".
Perhaps he's right, so here I go.

This series have me all loyalty divided.

First of all I don't want the world to end, but I'd like the Yankees and the Marlins to lose.

I'd like the Yankees to lose, but I'd like Karim García (the son of Pancho García, of ephimeral baseball fame) to be in the World Series.

So you have me wanting the Yankees not to score, but Karim to hit (couldn't the Yanks have a runner like the A's Bryne?). That's quite impossible.

I want Karim to play, but the Yanks to lose, but Yanks only lose when they bench Karim (this is not to give Slappy some perverse idea).

I want the Boston fans to be happy. They deserve it sooo much. But the hated Yankees, with their conceited fans and their horrible owner, are a better team.

As for the National League, the lesser deserving clubs got into the championship series. They will get smashed by the American League champ, if justice is to be done (but I'll root for them, if they play the NYY).

The Cubs have the "let's lose the important game even if we are a good team" personality, and the Marlins have no personality at all.

But heck, baseball is fun.

Roberta--You (and all Yankee fans) are welcome in this thread, truly. Yes, I hate the Yankees, but not their fans. Well, maybe the arrogant ones, the ones who imply that the Yankees are somehow entitled to win the WS every year. And, admittedly, Steinbrenner is always hard to stomach, but I have many friends (and a brother) who root for the Yankees, and we get along just fine.

As for that Cub fan last night, a temporary (or permanent) move to a safe undisclosed location might be in order. If the Cubs lose tonight, that poor fool will live in infamy as long as baseball is played at Wrigley!

I'm a Yankee fan not because the Yankees have a history of winning. I'm a Yankee fan because the Yankees are my home team. The lights of the stadium lit up my sky. I could hear the roar of the crowd while I was sitting in the kitchen having dinner with my family. From my best friend's apartment, we could actually hear the loudspeaker at the stadium.

I don't understand--never have and never will--why the team is so hated. In fact, I don't understand why people seem to need to include hating a team as part of rooting for their own.

When Steinbrenner was suspended from baseball (remember that?), I actually went out to celebrate. I was singing.

As for Pedro and Zimmer, Zimmer was wrong to run out on the field and take a swing at Pedro. Zimmer apologized. Pedro was wrong to throw at someone's head. It's part of the game for pitchers to brush back hitters, but headhunting is wrong, regardless of who does it. Zimmer was in a coma for about a month and nearly died as a result of a headhunting pitcher. An excuse for his actions? No.

You'd think I'd be used to it by now, but all the Yankee bashing upsets me. I take it personally. That's my team you're talking trash about. Yes, I hope the Yankees win. If they don't, c'est la vie.

Roberta,

you wrote: "I don't understand--never have and never will--why the team is so hated."

Well, "hate" is a pretty strong word, but I think I know why there is such intense dislike for the Yankee organization.

It's simply about fairness. Most people welcome and enjoy competition, as long as it's fair. Because NY generates such astronomically huge media revenues, the Yanks can afford, year after bleeping year, to spend much much more than every other franchise (and Steinbrenner still ends up with more net profits BTW). Until there is a salary cap and genuine revenue sharing to level the playing field, the Yanks will continue to have this unfair advantage. And they will continue to be ......... uh ..... disliked.

As a Red Sox fan, I acknowledge that my team outspends many other teams, too. MANY, but not ALL. And not every year. It's still unfair however. I know that and I would be more than willing to see a salary cap be instituted.

There's a cap in the NFL, as you may know, which is why the teams are so balanced and why there is so much interest in so many different cities.

Big teams are often hated.
Why?
Because they're rich and grab, through money, the best players.
Because their owners and players are often arrogant.
Because their fans are used to winning seasons, love to brag about their team's victories and tend to be sore losers.
Because you know that, in their hearts, most players would love to play in those teams.
Because they play beautifully against your team.
Because it's extra-difficult for your team to beat them (so victory is sweeter, it's an extraordinary pleasure).
Paraphasing Mao: "All victories have weight. Some victories (over Detroit Tigers, for instance) weigh less than a feather. Other victories (over the NYY, for example) weigh more than Mount Tao."

The Sox did their part.

Now the Cubs must redeem themselves, and their Fan (else he'll be on suicide watch).

Kerry Wood is not off to a good start...

PHEW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AND N O M A H IS BACK !!!!!!!!!

Biggest game of Pedro's career tomorrow. He had better bring it all.

I'm watching the Cubs now, hoping they can come back. I'm no fan of the Marlins. No history there. And that owner, spent a fortune one year, bought the championship, then blew up the team. They're back now, but I hope the Cubbies can pull it out, at least for now.

Wood gets it all back with his bat (but he better start getting his slider down, or else they'll be behind again before they know it...)
