Follow The Light

Nobody really knows
Where they're supposed to go
Hiding behind a wall
Afraid that they'll lose it all
But it's alright
Just follow the light
And don't be afraid of the dark
In the moonlight
You'll dance till you fall
And always be here in my heart
But nobody wants to know
'Cos nobody even cares
Everyone's on the make
Yeah and everyone's out for themselves
Me I'm on the longest road
Where everything's overload
But I've got my heart and soul
So don't throw me overboard
'Cos it's alright
Just follow the light
And don't be afraid of the dark
In the moonlight
You'll dance till you fall
And always be here in my heart
'Cos it's alright
Just follow the light
And don't be afraid of the dark
In the moonlight
You'll dance till you fall
And always be here in my heart
'Cos it's alright, alright now
And you're alright
Yeah we're alright now

She Had Some Horses by Joy Harjo

She had some horses.

She had horses who were bodies of sand.
She had horses who were maps drawn of blood.
She had horses who were skins of ocean water.
She had horses who were the blue air of sky.
She had horses who were fur and teeth.
She had horses who were clay and would break.
She had horses who were splintered red cliff.

She had some horses.

She had horses with eyes of trains.
She had horses with full, brown thighs.
She had horses who laughed too much.
She had horses who threw rocks at glass houses.
She had horses who licked razor blades.

She had some horses.

She had horses who danced in their mothers' arms.
She had horses who thought they were the sun and their
bodies shone and burned like stars.
She had horses who waltzed nightly on the moon.
She had horses who were much too shy, and kept quiet
in stalls of their own making.

She had some horses.

She had horses who liked Creek Stomp Dance songs.
She had horses who cried in their beer.
She had horses who spit at male queens who made
them afraid of themselves.
She had horses who said they weren't afraid.
She had horses who lied.
She had horses who told the truth, who were stripped
bare of their tongues.

She had some horses.

She had horses who called themselves, "horse".
She had horses who called themselves, "spirit", and kept
their voices secret and to themselves.
She had horses who had no names.
She had horses who had books of names.

She had some horses.

She had horses who whispered in the dark, who were afraid to speak.
She had horses who screamed out of fear of the silence, who
carried knives to protect themselves from ghosts.
She had horses who waited for destruction.
She had horses who waited for resurrection.

She had some horses.

She had horses who got down on their knees for any saviour.
She had horses who thought their high price had saved them.
She had horses who tried to save her, who climbed in her
bed at night and prayed as they raped her.

She had some horses.

She had some horses she loved.
She had some horses she hated.

These were the same horses.

Wow - great to come here and see all your posts -
I wanted to contribute something in return but the poetry is not happening

Then i remembered Olga asking if i could recommend a new singer/songwriter... well, here's Kevin Devine, a little known talent from New York. I think you folks might 'get' him..

Recently i've been hitting the guitar - i guess i'm inspired

here are the lyrics to the first song

It's Only Your Life

You wrestle yourself to the ground
You springboard and kick yourself in the mouth
Cause all of that drama, that embarrassed charade
Couldn't stop you or settle you down

So you got back with your black hole
And you don't care who's out there or who knows
Cause you're spent and you're sad
So you've bronzed it, it's your badge
Now you've fixed it to all your clothes
Like a t-shirt and overcoat
So it's with you through hot or cold
But I would tear it from the cloth
Yeah, I would tear it from the cloth

Grow up and knock it off

Cause there's a world awake outside
With injustice and with music and with july, july
With history's arc, With your family,
And with art.
But it don't mean nothing
Not to you, not tonight

Because you can't see past the length of your nose
The biggest problems, well you're sure are your own
That girl you cut loose
Those two friends that cursed you
And all that powder that you can't leave alone

And you say, you know, you know, you know
But you know that you don't, you don't, you don't
Well if you mean it, you'd really try
If you mean it, you'd really try
To let that **** die

So marry yourself to your work
And crowd your confusion with words
Then round out your life with some girl you might like
While you bury your love in the dirt

Cause it's endless, the ditch you can dig
When you're stubborn, and you're prideful, and you're all over it
So I suggest you make sense of the time you've got left
So you don't end up back where you've been

And you say you won't, you won't, you won't
And I hope that you don't, you don't, you don't
But if you mean it, then stand up and fight
If you mean it, then stand up and fight
Because I mean, it's only your life

I mean, it's only your life

To fix or ruin
To figure what to do with
It's only your life

To fix or ruin
Cause no one else is going to do it
Because it's only your life

Kevin Devine

thanks for your great posts.
I'll be around

peace

@Joeblow,
hope it was worth it to you

-About horses... strange, because i've been trying to write a story from a horse's point of view.. after reading The Plague Dogs by Richard Adams. I looked at some dreams that Black Elk wrote about and i started imagining i could write the piece in a kind of 'folk story' way.
I dunno what i'm doing really

@Endymion,
Hey there! thought of you this week when we were admiring the giant veggies at the fair (and managing to carry away 3 sample bags of carrots each - they were giving them away!)

@ehBeth,
hi ehBeth

interesting, because my neighbour - an organic veg farmer, sometimes sends a box of veg my way. The other day i looked at these carrots the size of parsnips and wondered about global warming. He said he's got carrots growing out of his ears! (I hope not)
So anyway... i started thinking about carrot cake. Don't have the first idea how to make it, but i had some once years ago and never forgot it was so good... (if anyone knows of a good recipe...)

Also - carrots peeled then steamed whole are fantastic. I mean, really good.
(just in case you've never tried it)

cheers,
e

@Izzie,
Hi Izzie " Follow the light - yes

Hey, I wrote this poem after your photographs inspired me to go outside.
Letty was on my mind
This is for you both

Dedicated to Izzie and Letty

So Ends The Day

Leaves unfurl their patterned shells of green and gold
As shadows full beneath the sun a flower unfolds
And so beholds the smiling one
Birds cross a summer sky
Crazy joy of acrobats set free
Their highest climb loops lazy as they call to the sea
Clouds drift through streams of time
All memories unwinding light
A pre-historic glint unsung
So blinks the sun
So ends the day
As the flower closes up its eye
And the last bird flies and fades away

Hey " I don't know about you but I am getting hit by some really bad weather right now.

@Endymion,
Apparently it's been a very good year for carrots in our part of Ontario.

Carrot cake is wonderful - mostly because it's so rich and decadent. Somewhere, in a book, I've got the recipe for a carrot cake that a friend and I made for a friend's wedding (oh, my! almost 30 years ago!)

@Endymion,
hmmm
peeled carrots
we don't usually bother with peeling - just a good scrub down

I like them steamed, with a drizzle of honey and a bit of butter.

We just got a wonderful honey/ginger/garlic sauce from these folks
http://www.redheadpantry.ca/products/ and I think it will be amazing drizzled on carrots.

@ehBeth,
Mmmmm.

I like just a little brown sugar and butter in the bake, but that sounds very good Beth.

@Joeblow,
Hi Joe,
I'm really glad you like those two songs.

With lines like. 'Grow up and knock it off,' I imagine that some people might think he is criticising others but I know he is talking to himself..
(I do that all the time in my writing)
Thanks for saying you would read my work. That means a lot (and makes me want to write) Smile

Cheers

@Izzie,
Hi Izzie " I'm glad you like the poem " I started writing it ages ago, at the end of summer but I've struggled with it all this time. I don't know why I'm having so much trouble writing. Maybe because things are changing for me (and I sense that they are).
Feel free to print the poem off or whatever " you are welcome

Hey " I spent most of yesterday working outside, trying to clear a bank of mud that came down (no trees with it thankfully) with that rain. Did you see the lightening early Sat morning? It was a pulse raiser here.

Thanks for your posts, Izzie.

Peace

@ehBeth,
Hi ehBeth,

Thanks for the chat, sorry I got called away (by the weather).
Yeah, I am a fan of ginger and use it quite a bit (in curries and Chinese veg, mostly). I'm definitely going to try your recipe.

Thanks

I think the weather in Britain has gone slightly nuts
While finishing clearing up yesterday, the mess that was so nearly a flood - i saw a massive bumble bee still going about its business
seemingly without a care in the world.
From where i stood the bee looked about the size of ping-pong ball.
And today the sun is shining. Hard to believe it is November.
I'm off for a walk.
