SMALL VOICES

1. Haidar (Do they imagine?)

http://english.aljazeera.net/mritems/images/2007/10/9/1_230454_1_5.jpg

I was but a youth of sixteen years
when Josef Stalin sent my people into exile
Half a million tartars deported
on the long, long journey
Two hundred thousand died
falling by the way side
in helpless abandon

In my dear family
only I survived
and then when I
was already an old man
I returned to my home in Crimea
But the houses I grew up in
were gone or taken over
by many poor families
who had themselves been exiled
and carelessly deported
from somewhere else!

Sometimes I ask myself
if the rulers and great deciders
ever look down from their palaces
into the broken hearts of men
Do the lucky ever look
out of their dream?
And if they do
do they imagine
they are free?

Manaus (in the Brazilian Amazon) 2008.

Amazon Woman

Out here in the Amazon, it's the same old story
The indigenous resist
While state police protect the rich
Who buy up land
Chop down trees
Stick beef in cans
And call it living

Watching the land transform
From Eden into oblivion
Watching a million suns burn down
Long after the dawn

Watching gods fall

Children in the Congo

Hunger

we could eat something
something nice
something other than rice
but rice would do
we could eat potatoes too

we could eat long green beans
sunflower seeds
And a thick lamb stew
pineapples and ice cream
anything we can dream

we could eat this root
with its tiny baby shoot
a handful of berries
sweet and tart
that would be a start

Little Brother please find
A way to cling to life
Or i will eat my heart

@edgarblythe,

Hi edgar

It means a lot to me that you return to this thread. I can't believe I've only written three poems for it, in three years.

I think about the man in the first poem quite a lot. When I read what he had to say about returning home after all those years of being made a refugee, only to find his house filled with refugees from somewhere else, I don't know... it really struck me. I wrote the poem almost spontaneously -

Speaking of which -I hope to visit the spontaneous poetry thread again soon. It's looking good these days and I'm glad to see it still working for people. Hey - I can remember how bloody nervous I was the first time I posted anything there!
Your support was and is something I value greatly and hope to be able to pass on myself, a bit more around here, now.

Hope we talk again soon

endy

Trust No Body (Curse of the Black Gold)

Trust no body with your soul
Don't trust them with your black gold
They'll suck the marrow from the land
And leave you hungry with an empty hand

Don't trust any body, no
Don't trust them with your heart's goal
They'll take their knives and cut out all your dreams
They'll leave you beaten, broken by their greed

Don't trust any body with your life
Who talks of wealth, for free, without a price
Who tears the trees and roots from the soil
To lay their ugly pipes of stolen oil
Don't trust them, friend
They will kill you in the end

Message to the War Boy

Don't wonder
Don't think about it
Don't look me in the eyes, I'm blind
Don't doubt it

Don't question
Don't hope to understand
Don't think that you'll know better when
You're a man

Don't give up
Or give into pain
Don't decide to be resigned
It isn't your shame

Don't imagine
The world can't see
War has torn your heart apart
Don't look at me

Cutting Up Humanity

They cut off my mind
Then they cut off my legs
They sent me to die
Then they left me for dead
Now I'm out of my mind
When my money's all spent
And I'm on the bread line
And I can't pay my rent

They built me right up
Then they knocked me right down
They pulled me along
Then they pushed me out
Now I'm finding it tough
When my face hits the ground
And I'm getting it wrong
And I can't work it out

They dug out my heart
Then they pulled out my tongue
They sliced off my ears
Then they chopped off my thumbs
Now I'm back at the start
When my life was undone
And I'm trapped in their gears
And I can't ever run

Cos they cut off my mind
When they sawed off my legs
They ripped out my spine
When they lobbed off my head
Now I'm out of my mind
When my money's all spent
And I'm on the bread line
And I can't pay my rent
