Here are the mechanics for me, but allow me to reiterate...I suck big time at math.

0 + 50 = 50
50 x 1 = 50
50 – 60 = -10
-60 – 60 = -70

-70 x 0 = 0 (which eliminates all the other operations)

0 + 10 = 10

@Lustig Andrei,
I got zero literally and figuratively. Neutral
using the commutative, associate and distribution laws?

@argome321,
Okay...set it out.

Let's see your reasoning...piece by piece.

I want to understand it.

@argome321,
0+50X1-60-60x0+10=x
50-60-(60x0)+10=x
50-60+10=x
50-60+10=0

we know that the first integer is 50
the next integer is -60
the third integer is 10
when totaled the minus ten is cancelled out by the plus ten

the algebraic laws help you to move the integers around.

the -60x0 is a multiplication operation that you can bracket.
just like the 50x1 can also be bracket if you like.
so in essence you are say 50 xi is still 50
we know 0+ 50 is still 50

thus you have 50 -60+10=x
next you have -10+10=x
x=0

@argome321,
One...that is doing it with the parens...not with the linear calculation.

Two...you left out the x0 element.

Could you redo your calculations including that component...and perhaps also not using the parens.

No matter how many times I look at this...

...I keep focusing on that element that multiplies by zero.

Whether linear or using the parens...whatever product is derived is multiplied by zero.

The next operation is to add 10.

I really am lousy at math...and I really want to understand this. Don't sour on me...just help me understand it.

I omitted showing that step because zero times any number is still zero.
the original number to find (x) consist of 5 integers, 5 factors.
0, 50x1, -6, -60x0, +10

1)0+50X1-60-60x0+10=x
2)0+50-60-0+10=x
3)50-60+10=x
4)-10+10=x
5)0=x

3)50-60+10=x
4)-10+10=x
5)0=x

Exactly...and I expect that omission was so that you could come up with zero as an answer.

But if you had not left it out...the end of the situation would have been...

...what is zero + 10, right?

no, I think you are forgetting the -10

the equation next to last step is -10+10 and this is after you eliminate the zero's on the left side of the equation.
it is -10+10=x
Remember the -10 is what is left over from the 50-60.
the x on the right side of the linear equation is the unknown, the answer that we are looking for.
It might be less confusing if Ih ad used a Y on the right side of the equation instead of an X

I'm going to use brackets around each integer to show each integer
which is a total of 5

(0)+(50X1)(-60)-(60x0)+(10)=Y
0=0, 50x1=50, 60 =60, 60x0=0, 10

If everyone agrees that the answer is 10...I guess it is 10.

I'm still having a problem with it (as I mentioned, my math sucks) but I will look it over a bit more. Maybe the light will dawn.

@Frank Apisa,
Don't get cute, Frank. No one agrees that the answer is 10. Laughing It's nada, nil, zilch, zero.

Oops...I meant zero. Truly. I told ya I was lousy at math.

Guessing as usual, he, Frank?

Instead, in reality, it's zero.

Your explanation was crystal clear.

@argome321,
0+50x1-60-60x0+10=Y
1) 0+50x1-60+10-60x0=Y
2) 0+50x1-50-60x0=Y
3) 50-50-60x0=Y
4) 0-0—0=Y
5) 0=Y
6) Using the commutative math law combing the 10 with the 60 first, leaving me a total of -5o and the next step, the next combination of
50-50=0

Thanks, but I'm not a math teacher. I do ok. I think I have a very decent grasp.

@argome321,
I came up with the same answer as argorne by a different path -- if you just go term-by-term they cancel each other out, leaving you with a goose egg.

That is what I've been trying to demonstrate to Frank It's basic ninth grade algebra.

@argome321,
When you use brackets the answer is zero. Why are you insisting that only the penultimate 60 is multiplied by zero and not everything that proceeded it? If there are brackets I agree, but there aren't. So I'm with Frank on this.
