They said, "They are cycling next week."

In reported speech:

They said that they were cycling the next week.
They said that they were cycling the following week.

I think both sentences are correct as reported. Am I correct?

Many thanks.

@tanguatlay,
Actually it would be more correct to say: They said that they were cycling next week. The second sentence reads correctly as it is.

Are we doing your English homework for you tanguatlay? Or why all the questions?

@tanguatlay,
They said that they were cycling the next week.

"They said they would be cycling next week." is the way I would say it.

@tanguatlay,
Both are awkward and there is one superfluous 'the' in the first report. I would recommend:
They said they would be cycling next week.
or
They said they were cycling next week.
