Who Does Your Zip Code Support in this Election?

The polls may be fairly scientific, but is it as telling as who is donating to whom?

NC is supposedly a swing state this year. I found this data and looked up my zip code which shows that there have been 28 donations totalling $17,488 to McCain and 188 donations totalling $37,702 to Obama. Overall for my zip code there were 352 donations totalling $154,488. Hillary, Romney and Ron Paul got the difference between the total and what went to McCain and Obama, with a small amount also going to Ron Paul.

(The data is only through filings July 31st, way before the conventions and VP selections, but it will be interesting to compare after the August and Sept. data is calculated.)

What's going on in your zip code? Put your zip in the yellow box half way down the page and then sort by candidate.

According to the site you linked to, there have been 10 donations from my zip code, totalling $750.
3 to McCain, 4 to Obama, 2 to Huckabee and 1 to Sam Brownback.

I dont know if it means anything, but I have noticed something while driving around town.
Judging ONLY by the yard signs I see, this community is about evenly split.
I have however noticed something odd.
The west side of town is mostly black, and thats where most of the McCain signs are.
The east side is mostly white, and thats where most of the Obama signs are.
I seriously doubt if it means anything, but I do find it interesting.

Overall New Mexico contributions are going about 2/3 Obama, 1/3 McCain which is very typical for this state. Based on the last several elections, the actual vote will be much more even and could go either way.

In my zip code Democrat contributions are substantially more than Republican contributions, but the huge lion's share went to Bill Richardson. Contributions to all other candidates are pretty unremarkable.

@Foxfyre,
Same in my zip code, lion's share to Bill Richardson, switching to Obama for just July 2008.

@littlek,
How does that break down between the candidates, lil k? I would expect a large Hillary / Obama lean but may be surprised.

@Foxfyre,
Yeah, I could see Richardson getting the early contributions in his home state. I wonder how that will will shift, especially with immigration concerns.

@squinney,
In my zip it's leaning hugely Obama with a bunch of older contributions for Edwards (oops). The rest seem to be split between Huckabee, Clinton, Richardson and McCain.

My guess would be that the actual election will be decided by 3 percentage points or less.

I'm curious. If you've made contributions, why would your name not show up on the list?

@squinney,
Immigration is pretty much off the radar right now except in those industries that large numbers of illegals gravitate to and there are still some rumblings there especially since we're in a slowdown now and jobs are harder to come by. But immigration does not seem to be at the top of the list for most right now.

New Mexico is registered heavily Democrat and at least some loyalties run very deep here no matter what the issue of the week might be. The north and south will usually vote Democrat no matter who is running; the east side goes mostly Republican. The west and middle are a mixed bag, but since at least half the people live in the Albuquerque metro/trade area, it is that mixed bag that has made us a battleground state for a lot of elections now.

New Mexico has more than its fair share of federal government installations, and government employees tend to favor Democrats that they trust to fund more stuff and not make cuts in spending. But we also have three good size military bases which is a lot for a rather sparsely populated state, and the military usually tilts more Republican.

So, the contributions reflect the demographics, but really don't reflect the vote these days. It's anybody's race to win or lose here.

@squinney,
I don't see a place where they break it down and I won't crunch 38 pages of data. For Massachusetts in general:

Top Candidate
Barack Obama
$977,261 raised.
Total Funds Raised
by all candidates
$1,284,110
Top City
Cambridge
$149,454 raised.

Obama's only received about 15 times as much money in my zip code as McCain. Clearly I live in a Republican enclave.

@patiodog,
Not just a Republican conclave, but based on the disproportionate amount of donations that went to Romney, I would say a conservative Republican conclave.

@Foxfyre,
Very much so. Just the other day there was a lively discussion about closing the borders and invading Pakistan while I was in line at the Needle, Medical Marijuana, Gay Marriage, and Abortion Cooperative (or NMMGMAC, for short).
