What are the best films you have seen this year? Why did you like them so much?

@Lordyaswas,
Another score for being a chick....I just use my pocketbook! Muaha. Stick it to the man, baby! I hope to meet back here and discuss! I've loved almost all of Wes' films, and I appreciate his Bill Murray fetish.

I watched Silver Linings Playbook last night and I gotta tell you...that was like watching 2 movies grafted into one.

Through the first half I'm going " Yeah, great movie on a serious subject: mental illness"

Then all of a sudden, as if the underwriter money guys had stepped in, director David Russell changes to contrivances and Phil. Eagles worship.

It's a feel-good ending and DeNiro is wonderful, as is Jennifer Lawrence(Oscar winner), but it could have been so much more.

@tsarstepan,
I just got back on netflix (yay) and The Trip is next on my queue..

The disc I just got and haven't seen yet, maybe tonight, is something of an oddity. Netflix thinks it understands me.
Noooooooooooo!
With this one, I'm going to either love it or hate it. No words in the movie... Le Quattro Volte.

@tsarstepan,
As usual I wonder how the survey was run - I suppose I could look it up. My take is that a lot of people are watching their expenses these days, so that affects some who may have watched more in the past. But once you spring to pay for netflix or equivalent, you are only paying monthly for possibly many movies.

The numbers seem low even past that suppostion of people in money trouble, though. Maybe video games are gnawing away at the movie/tv film market.

Quirky? Moi?
I've already checked when the film is on at my local flickery, and have put my special coat (with the poacher's pocket) into the dry cleaners, considering what happened to it last time.

I have discovered that this pocket can fit a whole film's worth of normal priced sweeties, plus two cans of fizzy drinks. This will save an absolute fortune compared to the stuff they sell in the cinema.

All I have to do now is practise my walk so I don't rustle too loudly.

I remember a cowboy who wore taffeta that rustled.

@glitterbag,
Ok, changed my mind, I'm an hour and 13 minutes in, it's looking up. Or I'm perking up. Better than I I thought during the earlier part of the film.

I saw it in the theater a few weeks ago. Well made, but terribly bleak. And several of the characters were scarily familiar, having grown up in the Plains. I didn't see what all the fuss was about with Bruce Dern. It was a zoned-out performance. Two Xanax, and I could've played it the same way.

Just watched the tiny and exquisitely humanist film Short Term 12 (2013) . http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2370248/combined

I get where the Oscar buzz was coming from. What a shame it was completely snubbed. What a shame that it's studio probably didn't or couldn't market the film enough to the Academy to at least get Brie Larson a nomination for lead actress. It's such a shame that we have to dedicate a spot for Meryl Streep. She won two years ago for a critically mixed-review film, The Iron Lady. She doesn't need an award every time she sneezes.

@panzade,
I just stopped Le Quattro Volte for a while. I'm 45 minutes in. Have been savoring it. No matter what happens in the rest of the film (which I am looking forward to), it's now one of my favorite films ever. Ever.

I can see it wouldn't interest a lot of people, or would it?, but me, I'm very pulled in to it. I'm glad I didn't read too much about it - I like surprise in books and movies, not much knowledge aforethought, only enough knowledge to buy the book or netflix the movie, no more. Boy, am I glad to see this one.
