@MJA,
You're a snide son-0f-a-bitch. You asked a question, i gave you an answer, and the best you can come up with is an irrelevant, snotty come back, and a feeble one at that . . .

@aidan,
Cows and dogs don't know their names Rebecca. They recognise the sound and its conditioned associations. A pig is said to recognise the sound of a stick rattling in a bucket.

Pavlov got dogs salivating on seeing men in white coats.

I'd dump Cohen if I was you.

And there were some quotes from the Bible along the way. Has any astronaut ever referred to the Bible as the Bobble?

I give up. I do know that a dog can tell its own name by this simple little demonstration that you could do in your own home

1Get two dogs, train them , and feed them , and take them into your basement flat

2Develop a series of names for the two dogs. The names should be different so as not to audially confuse the dogs

3Line the two dogs (after training is complete) up in the kitchen and stand on the other side of the room.

4Call one by its name and have him heel to yoiurside.

You will see that the dogs can tell their names apart and the correct dog will come to you and sit.

Do not try this if your mum doesnt allow you to have any pets in her basement.

I am glad to help you better understand dogs. Now a cow will come to you too, (If you dont represent evil or pain to the cow)

@farmerman,
That's what I said fm--train them.

Why do you "give up"? Has any astronaut referred to the Bobble? Or made any other derogatory remarks about the Bible?

There were readings from Genesis on Apollo 8. Setanta is trying to have it both ways.

Don't have to; it's a fact of life. Something so common, you fail to see it.

You said "surviving"--not me. Here you are--

Quote:
spendi, You don't even understand evolution; all surviving biology is not always positive for other living things.

Your get out " Don't have to" is self stroking. You do have to actually. Petulance won't wash on a science thread.

I asked for fm to arbitrate on your statement. Where is he?

@spendius,
why? do you fear your physician? Hes there to help you. Hes a trained specialist and he only wants the best outcome for you.
Now relax and take the medicine .

Why do you say that? Just as a pig recognizes that the sound of a stick rattling in a bucket might mean dinner, people recognize the sound of cutlery being laid and glasses clinking means dinner, just as my dog recognizes that the sound of her dry food hitting the bowl means dinner.

We all, people and animals, recognize the sounds of our own name and it's conditioned associations.
When/how/why do you think you learned to perk your ears up at the name 'spendius' instead of something like Bob or Mike?
It's because when your mother or primary caregiver interacted with you she pronounced those particular syllables moreso than others.
That's how you came to associate them with 'you'.
That's also nothing more than auditory training.

In terms of Leonard Cohen, before you advise me to give up on him, I think you should reread the words of the song. He happens to be on your side - philosophically.
When he says, 'Give me Christ or give me Hiroshima' - what do you think he means?

@aidan,
Obviously Rebecca--that's what I said. I assume a degree of intelligence in my readers and try not to address them as if they are a class of infants as anti-IDers do. Are you an anti-IDer?

The dinner gong in a posh hotel is an amusing phenemenom don't you think?

I know that Cohen is nowhere near the same side as me. Despite his pandering. I have no idea what he means by the line you quote. I'm an optimist.

I don't fear doctors fm. I loan mine books and have played cards with one. And necked his Mrs. The idea that he's here to help me is laughable. I know what outcome he is searching for if you don't.

Have you read Medical Nemesis by Ivan Illich. I don't recommend it to innocents like you lot.

I don't take any medicine. And I'm always relaxed. I didn't used to be. I've been where you are. It's no good. No good at all.

@spendius,
Im always amazed at how, of what you babble, so little is of any use to me. Even gungasnake and your crazy Oz asslicker, ANUS say some things that are of interest once and awhile. You just blather on with unconnected random thoughts that you launch with the hopes that something will stick. You go from one thing to another like a butterfly on a manure pile. You are really quite a self absorbed chap do you know it?

Im glad Im not going to be like you. My interests arent made of Narcissism and self adulation like yours.

@aidan,
Leonard Cohen has been following me around recently. I rented the dvd of his London concert and watched it five times. Seeing the words printed increases their impact. Thanks!

No, but I'm not anti-evolutionist theory either.
I don't think the two necessarily negate each other.
It's hard for me to be anti-anything until I have a full understanding of what exactly the truth is, and then examine where that (what is revealed as 'the truth) diverges from other theories and if or how it might negate them.

So, as far as that goes, I'm not anti-Leonard Cohen. He never struck me as a panderer. I think he's a strong lyricist and musically, I enjoy his melodies.

I think what he means by 'Give me Christ or give me Hiroshima' is that without the commitment to or adherence to Christ's admonition to love one another as one would love oneself, regardless of race, creed, nationality, whatever - man's ability to be inhumane to man - which is what we saw at Hiroshima - would be much more commonly enacted.
I also really love the line, 'Love's the only agent of survival'.

He may not be speaking specifically as a Christian, but I think he recognizes the value in Christ's teachings.

Leonard Cohen was born Jewish, but he's explored many different spiritual paths.

Pom - I find those lyrics very powerful too.

@aidan,
While introducing himself to the London audience, he first listed the drugs he has taken (a spurious list as it included Ritalin!) and then religions he pursued. He finished with a statement that "cheerfulness kept breaking in." Wink

What do you mean? I do have faith in spendius - as I do in you - and a lot of people on this forum. But I don't understand how what I just said evidenced that I in fact do have faith in spendius.

Yeah - I get that from him. That's probably why I've always liked him. I like cheerful people.

@aidan,
Asking him to interpret a line from a song is not something I would do.
