@sozobe,
Oh, I'm handling it in the most sensible, mature way possible--pretending I never saw it, of course...

I can't decide what to do, I'm still mulling. It's just such an issue with us, her not getting that I need SOME parts of my life that she's not involved in, that it makes me think just ignoring it is better. Maybe she'll take the hint. But really I'll probably end up following the instructions in that how-to article so that she's in a group that doesn't see that much of my stuff. I feel pretty bad just ignoring the stupid request...

How about you, no friend requests from your mom yet? I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

@ossobuco,
Hi Osso, hi Reege! good to see you guys too...I think of you and the whole a2k gang all the time, but I sure get a lot more done in a day when I don't hang out here Smile We've been really busy--Mr. C graduated and we moved back home, he's job-hunting, I'm taking summer classes, etc... But I have a few weeks off in August, I'll be around so much then you'll all be sick of the sight of me Smile

Hi cypher,

I am glad you came back and like David, I find your artwork extraordinary.
You are so very talented and I hope you'll soon get the recognition you deserve.
I'd love to buy one of your books!

@TTH,
I love your website, cypher.. and I've always loved your art.

Do you still have bunnies?

Did you move back to, ah, a bit southerly of the area we both once lived, in a kind of a2k succession scheme? (For those who don't know, when I moved from where I was living in northern california, cyphercat moved fairly nearby my town about a month after I left.. so we never got to meet up.)

"Microsoft invests $240 million in Facebook
Software maker wins in bidding war with Google, buys 1.6 percent share"
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21458486/

Now that is alot of money for less than 2% interest.

That depends on 2% of WHAT.

Right now it's 2% of a company that loses 100's of millions of dollars a year and that has not figured out how to make a profit yet.

It has a lot of potential, but unless they figure out the monetization (Google hasn't figured out how to monetize social yet, and they aren't as good as Google) it's a horrible spend.

@OmSigDAVID,
My posts were just an observation. I was just taken back by how much money was involved to invest in that website. I recently joined facebook so I haven't been there long enough to have an opinion on it one way or another.

that is a fantasy valuation...News Corp has written down the value of MySpace by $3 billion since they bought it in 05, as soon as something better than facebook comes along they will go down the same path. There is little long term value in social sites, people can go somewhere else in a few clicks, and they always do eventually.

I hope that u will be defensively well armed
before u are in touch with the long distance fiends.

I love Facebook. My kids suggested I join (they thought it would help me find work) and I did. Now, I am friends with their friends . . . who are people who have been part of the family's life since my 32 daughter was 5. Some are now parents. Some are in graduate school and others are still living at home. It's a great warm fuzzy because I care about them.

The other side of the coin is that I have heard from people I haven't seen since before my daughter was born. What a thrill that is! Old friends from high school, college and grad school have emerged out of the ether net and I can learn who they have become. Some are great . . . some are (gasp!) so right of center that it is a tad embarrassing.

Well according to FB they became profitable in the last quarter of 2009.

"We're also succeeding at building Facebook in a sustainable way. Earlier this year, we said we expected to be cash flow positive sometime in 2010, and I'm pleased to share that we achieved this milestone last quarter. This is important to us because it sets Facebook up to be a strong independent service for the long term."
