For mm and McG from TLL's post, above:

"Voters dealing with skyrocketing gas prices and collapsing home values just love being called "whiners" by a millionaire. This kind of out-of-touch condescension comes as no surprise to anyone who has followed Gramm's career. He's left his fingerprints on some of the worst economic debacles in U.S. history."

And that has exactly what to do with what I wrote?

You'll never understand the plight of many Americans; millions of them.

And of course, you do?
You understand the plight of the homeless, the mentally ill, the rape victims, the hungry, those without jobs, those without families, those without medical insurance, the crime victims, those that have lost loved ones in accidents, or due to illness, or due to violence.
You understand the plight of EVERY single American, because according to you if you havent been thru it you cant understand it.

How can you understand the plight of someone if you havent been thru whatever it is they are going thru?

I wish you understood the meaning of what you just said MM, or moreover, what it implies.

I'm just thinking about all the conservatives in A2K and some of the comments they make about the underprivileged etc. I'm also thinking about statements from the same group talking about how they don't feel racism is an issue etc.

If MM understands that he cannot understand the plight of the millions from a first hand experience, and that his views are based on his first hand experience, then he should understand that all those people in the world who have a different view than him do so for their own reasons.

MM seems like a fairly reasonable guy, and I have zero doubt that he votes as to his best interest based on his life experience. I just hope he recognizes that others do the same.

Their plight, which he admitted does not understand, will no doubt mold their views. I'd say in contemporary times, those in plight feel better with democratic leadership. Doesn't mean it will always be that way though.

Maybe it's forgotten that some things in politics transcend political party or rival philosophies.

McCain today:

Quote:
"I was concerned about a couple of steps that the Russian government took in the last several days. One was reducing the energy supplies to Czechoslovakia. Apparently that is in reaction to the Czech's agreement with us concerning missile defense, and again some of the Russian now announcement they are now retargeting new targets, something they abandoned at the end of the Cold War, is also a concern."

Hmm, Czechoslovakia hasn't been a country for 15 years. Wonder who is going to inform McCain of this.

For the love of God, Republicans! It's not too late to nominate Mitt!

:

* 1918-1938: a democratic republic
* 1938-1939: after annexation of Sudetenland by Germany in 1938 gradually turned into a state with loosened connections between Czech, Slovak, and Ruthenian parts. A large strip of southern Slovakia and Ruthenia was annexed by Hungary, and the Zaolzie region by Poland.
* 1939-1945: De-facto split into the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and the Slovak Republic. De jure Czechoslovakia continued to exist, a government-in-exile supported by the Western Allies was based in London; after German invasion of Russia also recognised by the USSR.
* 1945-1948: a country governed by a coalition government with Communist ministers (including the prime minister and minister of interior) playing leading roles
* 1948-1989: a Communist country with a centrally planned economy (from 1960 onwards officially a Socialist Republic):
o 1969-1990: a federal republic consisting of the Czech Socialist Republic and the Slovak Socialist Republic;
* 1990-1992: a federal democratic republic consisting of the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic

I still refer to "it" as Czechoslovakia.

Stop being such a putz!

Introducing Wrong-Way McCain

This week, Americans were introduced to Wrong-Way McCain. To be sure, it's the same John McCain ("McSame") who would continue the policies of George W. Bush that 80% of Americans believe have put the country on the wrong track. It's also the same "Jukebox John" who has changed his tune 61 times on issues foreign and domestic, including a dizzying 10 times in two weeks back in June. But as he showed repeatedly over the past several days, Wrong-Way McCain is also the Republican presidential nominee who simply can't keep his stories straight.

Whether the result of crass political opportunism, transparent deceit or just plain confusion, on at least 7 occasions this week alone, Wrong Way McCain couldn't remember what he stood for, if anything at all.

As I've said before, McCain has all the signs of senility, and people still want him to be our president. What's wrong with this picture?

Why McCain for the REps, just look at the likes of Bush, Reagan, Quayle, Agnew, Nixon, et al. I guess Mitt was too bright and normal.

Yes, that would be my advice. 1992 was a loooong time ago.

McCain is running on his 'foreign-policy' expertise in many ways. I understand that the casual use of terminology will get the point across to a listener; but the leaders of countries are usually expected to show respect to other parts of the world by getting it right. I understand that Bush has been making this kind of mistake for so long, you may have gotten somewhat used to it...

No problem. As a citizen of the British Empire you should be allowed a little bit of freedom when talking about some obscure European countries...
