We are having a housewarming party.

I am providing snacks, BBQ, pop, water, coffee and tea. Is it tacky to ask that people bring their own alcohol?

We are having 25-30 people, this isn't a cozy get together.

Tachycardia, maybe, but not tacky.

Soda water, tonic water, coke, diet coke, sprite, ginger ale, little orange juice & cranberry juice, plenty of ice, those red plastic Solo cups...

Come to think of it, this is probably what started "BYOB" in the first place.

I agree with Slappy on it being fine but provide the mixers. I might add a small bowl of lemons, limes. Hmm, olives/onions for martinis? Depends on your friends... you could go overboard on the cocktail fixings when they all are wine or beer drinkers.

Most are beer drinkers.

Oooo, maybe a few bottles of wine are in order.
No one wants to bring their own wine.

LOL

I think it's a regional thing. BYOB doesn't happen past university here, but it was ok in other places I've lived.

I was going to suggest that you provide wine and let them bring alternatives to wine if they want them. But, that's still a lot of wine. Each 750ml bottle has 5 smallish glasses of wine or 4 big glasses. Maybe you supply wine with dinner?

I'll rethink, since I was thinking more back to my own party days, and those were in the cocktail years that turned to wine years before the recent cocktail years. Decent booze is serious money now. Adequate wine is not so much. If your crowd are beer drinkers, they probably have preferences.. My beer friends are on the picky side, liking not just regular old beers.

So, my next hypothesis is to provide a some sixpacks of a couple of beers you know most like, and some non-swill red and white wine, and some soft drinks for those who prefer those. Uh, and iced tea, made at home, cheap and good. With luck a lot of people will walk in the door with a six pack or a bottle of wine.
