Plus it seems like what he's actually getting nabbed on is "structuring" -- trying to hide where money was going and why.

I would have loved to seen them try to get a conviction on that. Or the Mann Act (which is a joke in thsi day and age and should be rewritten or appealed) Any prosecution on these grounds would have clearly constituted aselective prosecution and Spitzer would have likely defended himself successfully. He obviously chose to make a deal with the Feds that included resignation. The question remains as to what triggered this investigation and who leaked it, which constitutes a Federal Crime.

I'm a bit concerned about the Big Brother aspect of how this was discovered. His 'cash' habits (withdrawing cash from his personal bank accounts) triggered the investigation. CNN did a piece this morning on federal laws requiring financial institution to perform routine searches on All Of Us to determine if we are making unusual financial transactions involving cash. Unusual is apparently defined as atypical to the individual -- and it's all 'because of 9/11 and the way life has to be in these times'. um.... this sorta pisses me off.

"He obviously chose to make a deal with the Feds that included resignation."

Please explain. Not so obvious to me. He knew last Friday that he was going to be in the news; the first call that a guy like Spitzer would make is to his personal lawyer. He'd likely call his lawyer before he even told his wife.

It is now Wednesday. Apparently, the government of NY is approaching near-chaos. What's the hold up in Spitzer's resignation, if there were already a deal?

I deal may well be in progress, but I wouldn't hazard more than a guess about what it contains. However, Spitzer may well wish not to be disbarred. That could be a sticking point.

Last night I told my husband I wanted $5000 to have sex with him. He said he would pay $2,500 because I was twice as old as Spitzer's hooker. I told him that I should be worth $10,000 because I've had twice the experience. He asked me if I would accept Monopoly money. I said "no". We finally agreed that if he fixed the leak under the kitchen sink we would be even. I probably sold myself too cheap, but that leak was making me crazy.

Meanwhile, First Read reports that Spitzer will be resigning at 11:00 AM today (as in, 45 minutes from noww), and that the resignation will be effective Monday.

What kind of health insurance do these 5* ladies of the night have?

By the way, it'll cost you $31,000 for a 24 hr session.

Gosh, a rare event indeed. Better check to see if hell has frozen over.

This is enough to give me hope that dialogue between liberals and conservatives is possible after all.

That's very disturbing, indeed.

Really? You don't think that Mullah Ayatollah of the Chicago fundamentalist anti-American mosque ( a made up name to be used as an example) who suddenly starts moving $1000 a month to offshore accounts should be noticed?

Not unless the Mullah has a reason other than his ancestry to be a person of interest.

Leaving aside the ethical and legal issues--and the very real pain that Spitzer has caused his wife and daughters (by his indicating to the former that he considers her inadequate, and by showing the latter that he considers women a commodity), what bothers me most about the governor is his arrogance and great stupidity.

Arrogance in that he is entitled to act like this and in that he couldn't be caught. Stupidity in that escort services are notoriously dangerous. As a retired sex worker writes in a NYT OpEd this morning, no real players go anywhere near an escort service. If they want to cheat on their spouses, they take the private recommendations of their friends; the women they deal with are listed nowhere and have private numbers.

Arrogance and stupidity is a combination that I have seen in politicians before--and currently. But most arrogant politicians have some smarts--in the street-sense area. Spitzer flunks even the street-sense test. I wouldn't want someone this profoundly dumb being governor of my state.

And, of course, I could never forgive him for the heavy, bad number he's done on his wife and daughters.

I don't think he's dumb, arrogant maybe. Maybe he wanted to get caught.

Other than the hypocrisy, it's nobody's business so why does anyone sit in judgement and give a shite? It's not up to you, Miklos, to forgive or not forgive it. This is nothing to you. I think we should all mind our own business, on the ethical/moral basis... politically, that could be a whole 'nother story. Just don't vote for the guy.

Spitzer's dumb because as Attorney General he basically developed and installed the tracking system that caught him. He used this transfer of funds system to catch Wall Street criminals and close down large scale prostitution rings. He set his own trap and walked into it. I don't care that he had sex with hookers, I just don't want someone that stupid running the state government. If he wanted to get caught, he did a good job of it.
