Is Melatonin addicting?

Reply Tue 19 Feb, 2008 07:19 am
I dont mean addicting as in -narcotic- style addiction.

I mean, if you take it for a while ( over the counter brands at that) can you NOT fall asleep with out it because your body has become used to it?

I have been taking it off and on for a long time. I have a sleep disorder that does not allow me to fall asleep easily and I wake after each REM cycle ( about 90 minutes) fully awake and unable to fall back to sleep for almost 2 hours.

I take Melatonin and it helps me to be calm enough to fall asleep sooner then I would on my own, and helps me to still be tired the first time I wake up at night , but nothing more then that.

When i don't take it, it seems almost twice as hard if not impossible to fall asleep before 3 hours in bed when generally I can fall asleep in less then 2 hours.
I literally have to be in bed at 8 if I want to be asleep by 10/11

Could taking Melatonin be making things worse?

I would refrain from taking any drug unless you need it to sustain life.

I don't sleep well either, shewolf, but I have never entertained thoughts of killing you.

Hey SheWolf

Will follow this thread. As I think you know - I DON'T SLEEP!!!!!!!! It's horrible izzn't it. I have just come off sleeping aids which I was on for 2 years but since my surgery and been prescribed proper sleeping tablets (addictive) along with .... hold on .... reaching for container...2 x 10mg melatonin capsules - taken alternate nights. On Sun nite took a sleeping tablet at 3am - just had to sleep. Woke up a few hours later. Last nite took one at 11 and was still wide awake at 2am. Will give the melatonin a try tonight. Confused

I will follow this with interest and see what the world can come up with.

(Hope your arm has fully recovered now) Smile

(Gus - I completely agree with you say - but sometimes it's not so easy) Smile

Izz-

I have a melatonin bottle that I think is 3mg per pill.
You can take up to 5 in one night.

And I have.. Confused Only to feel so groggy that I can not do anything, but I sure as hell am not sleeping.

I was given a 'name' for my sleeping issue.. but I do not remember what it was.

What should normally happen in a person is that they have about 4-6 REM cycles in a night. ( These are about 90 minutes each)
We all wake up between these cycles, but the melatonin in our brains keeps us in a slight sleep stage. So we usually just remember that we were turning over, or remember small bits of the last dream while falling back to sleep.

There is a paralysis of the body that happens close to the end of the REM cycles just before we begin to wake that melatonin directly effects. With out that stage, our bodies do not fall into a real heavy sleep and we do not get the physical rest we need.

My issue is that not only do I not reach that paralysis stage, but I do not complete normal REM cycles and am not sleeping heavy enough to begin one.
When i do get to complete one, I am done sleeping for about 3 hours.

It can get so bad I can hallucinate during the day and often times can not drive because I am just too tired to function.

Taking the melatonin has helped me to 'feel tired' but.. fer fks sake.. I wish it would do more Laughing

I am debating on talking to my doc.. but I dont like the idea of being on RX sleep meds for a long time either.

(sigh)

Take a Benadryl, it helps. The Diphenhydramine in it (usually 25 mg)
is a mild sedative and helps you fall asleep and stay asleep. It also helps you get into a normal sleep rhythm again, so you don't need to take it very often.

I take it once in a while when crossing time zones USA to Europe, and it's suits me perfectly, especially since there isn't any residual of drowsiness left when waking up.

I have been down that road as well and I get the same results.
If i fall asleep , I am awake less then 3 hours later.

granted, when i was taking the benadryl I do seem to remember being able to get back to sleep easier.. It has been a while.

maybe a good strong dose of that might do the trick..

This is what happens when I'm overly stressed. How's your stress level?
