Barack Obama, if he wins, is going to learn the same lesson George W. Bush learned. It's a lot more challenging and difficult to govern than to campaign. I don't want to go through another period of learning on the job by our president.
I can respect that opinion, but I disagree with both sides of your position.
Clinton has not demonstrated to me that she is ready to govern on day one as she claims. I don't know that you can point to any successful action of hers that can support that position. I do think she can call upon a large number of experienced people to advise her and that is a plus, but I also think her choices of advisors are sometimes suspect. I also think that Clinton very much thinks of US politics as "us" and "them" and the "them" group is to be defeated, not pursuaded. That's not what I'm looking for on day one, though sometimes that's the way the game has to be played. Finally, I've always had a concern that the Clintons as a couple firmly believe that they know what is best and others should defer to their superior judgement. That's somewhat annoying when people are right, but the Clintons' track record is fairly average, so that makes that attitude a real problem.
Obama has also not demonstrated the ability to govern on day one, but based on his groundswell of support, he certainly appears able to lead on day one. His track record in the Ill. state legislature is one of comprimise and persuasion rather than trench warfare, but he's also held firm to bedrock principles, something that seems rare. To me, speaking out against the Iraq war before the war started was a tremendous risk. Five years ago, that could have wrecked a political career and very few candidates were willing to go there including Clinton and Edwards.
So, do we need a governor or a leader in our President? I'm not certain who is the better governor, but I believe the better leader is Obama. Just for the record, McCain is potentially the best leader, but we don't match up on the issues.
(By the way, GW Bush didn't learn any hard lessons about governing. He ran roughshod over the minority with great success and he's still doing it even though the Democrats are in the majority.)
