The majority of films from where I live have scenes with ice and snow in them Very Happy , but I will try for some in which the ice is more than just background.

Is-slottet (Ice Palace, 1987, a really nice Norwegian film)
Lumikuningatar (The Snow Queen, 1986)
Leningrad Cowboys go America (1989)
Ofelas (Pathfinder, 1987, a neat Sami film!)
Herr Arnes Pengar (Sir Arnes Treasure, a classic from 1919!)
Rock'n Roll Wolf (Ma-ma, 1976, a Russian/Romanian modernised musical version of The Wolf and the Seven Kids, featuring Popov the clown and acrobats from the Moscow Circus, the Bolshoy ballet, professional ice-dancers and a really cool musical score (created in France); the best the Eastern block had to offer. It is truly a gem and it has an all English version! When I looked it up on IMDB, I noticed that many people have very fond memories of this film and crave a copy for their children.)

This site has a (poor quality) preview in Russian which will give you an impression of this delightful children's film (It sounds better in English, though).

Smilla's Sense of Snow (this film is partly interesting but has some plot developments that are preposterous)

Good choice! And yes, the book is to be preferred.

Aleksandr Nevskiy (1938, Eisenstein's film in which the Teutonic knights sink through the ice)
Titanic (1943 thru 1997, if the iceberg counts as ice)
Ingenjör Andrées luftfärd (The Flight of the Eagle, 1982, historical Swedish Polar expedition gone disastrously wrong)
Slap Shot (1977, ice hockey comedy)
Ice Station Zebra (1968, cold war thriller)
The Thing from Another World (1951, arctic horror remade in antarctic setting as The Thing, 1982)
Alien Hunter (2003, lousy antarctic sf thriller)
AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004, also in antarctica)
Aaand.... Bambi (1942)! Very Happy

If ice cubes count then 9 1/2 Weeks (1986) fits the bill too.
King Arthur (2004, redid Eisenstein's scene of the enemy sinking through the ice)
Gorky Park (1983, featured an ice rink)
The Time Machine (2002, also featured an ice rink)

Paaskynen,

My favorite Norwegian film is "Insomnia" and it has ice in it, of course. The American remake was not as good.

I don't remember ice in insomnia (1997), since it was filmed during the summer (when the midnight sun disorients people, makes them loose track of time and causes insomnia), but I could be mistaken. The Swedish film Kungsleden (Obsession, 1964), for example, plays in May, when there still is ice on the lakes, but it is light almost round the clock here in the North.
