I'm sharpening my ice skate blades now. I'm going out Friday if I have to skate over the puddles which will be frozen ponds by then, or hire a dog sled. Know where there are any reasonably priced dogs for rent?
In the meantime, here's one to ponder, which we'll set aside when Bree returns:
Escaped prisoner
Doctor/medical expert
High School teacher
Beggar
i'm guessing Richard Dreyfus...or Nick Nolte....too tired to look up the movies...:-)
Hello Willow.
Nope. Not Dreyfus or Nolte.
The only movie beggar I can think of is the character Eddie Murphy played in Trading Places, but he doesn't fit all four roles. He was a prisoner in 48 Hrs and Another 48 Hrs, but I don't think he escaped in either of those movies, and if you stretched a point you could say he was a doctor in Dr. Dolittle and Dr. Dolittle 2, but that still doesn't give us the high school teacher.
I can think of lots of other people who have played one of the other roles, but nobody who has played all four. For example, escaped prisoners have been played by:
Humphrey Bogart (Dark Passage)
George Clooney, John Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson (all in O Brother Where Art Thou?)
And for high school teachers, I've got:
Glenn Ford (The Blackboard Jungle)
Kevin Kline (In & Out)
Matthew Broderick (Election)
Is that enough to get me a clue (if you're not too busy practicing your skating)?
I love your deductions, Bree.
But, I really don't feel like laughing. Actually, I'm developing a very "defiant" attitude toward the weathermen. Based on yesterday's forecast you'd have thought lilies would be blooming on Friday. HA!
OK, I got him. Now I just have to work out the movies -- but I'm about to go into a meeting, so I may not be able to work on this for a while.
Oh, please take your time. I'm just starting on my Figure Eights now.
It must have been hard for you to keep a straight face when I mentioned Blackboard Jungle, since Sidney Poitier was in that one (but as a high school student, not a teacher)!
Escaped prisoner - The Defiant Ones
Doctor/medical expert - No Way Out and Pressure Point
High School teacher - To Sir, with Love
Beggar - Porgy and Bess (as Porgy) (This is weird - I was listening to Miles Davis's "Porgy and Bess" recording earlier this afternoon!)
" (This is weird - I was listening to Miles Davis's "Porgy and Bess" recording earlier this afternoon!) "
I knew that. Wasn't sure about which version you were playing though.
I had considered using "High School student" and "High School teacher". That would probably have been more interesting.
Oh, Poitier was a Doctor/Medical Expert in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner", too. That was going to be one of my clues.
I always suspected you had a surveillance camera in my office -- now I know it!
I'm off to my piano lesson in a few minutes. I'll try to start a new question later tonight.
New one. This actor has played:
"Public school" student
Real-life writer
Real-life editor
Fictional choreographer
Darn--I was home sick yesterday, so of course I was working nearly all day on the arts festival, and as soon as I was catching up on a2k, I knew one right away, but alas, bree beat me to it! hmmm, I'll ponder this one...
Our weather has been the usual: 40-50, some rain; we're having our usual blah winter. I would almost pray for snow, except having lived in Chicago, and been in Atlanta for Snow-Jam, I know better!
I hope you're feeling better lois!
Hi All.
Hope you're feeling better, Loislane.
Bree: Your question is really a tough one, and after much pondering, I have only one idea, but it will be a start toward a clue.
Malcolm McDowell
Public School student - If
Real-life writer - Time After Time as H. G. Welles
Real-life editor - ?? no idea unless O. B. Keeler, sportswriter was also an editor in Bobby Jones, Stroke of Genius
Choreographer - The Company
Yes to Malcolm McDowell and all of the movies except the one in which he played a real-life editor. Since you came so close, I'll be happy to reveal the name of that one to you, but if you want to work on it a little more, here's a clue:
In the movie in which he played a real-life editor, he had a very small role. The lead role was played by his then- (now ex-) wife, who played a real-life author whose books his character edited.
Oops, I just realized that, now that you know who the actor is, that clue is a dead giveaway! (I had been planning to use it if you needed help figuring out who the actor was.)
And that has to be Crosscreek (Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings). I liked that movie, but must admit I had forgotten Malcolm McDowell was in it.
hmm. I think that's two words. Cross Creek.
