I think you're offering me another clue with "happy" and "pursuit", but darn, I can't get Nick Nolte out of my mind. He was my first thought before you gave me all those wonderful clues. Jefferson in Paris would fit and he was a lawyer in Cape Fear. Oh, he was a painter in New York Stories. But, I have no ideas about "art collector". Is it Mulholland Falls? And the classic - could it be Cannery Row?

I think you've got it, Raggedy. "Pursuit of happiness" was written by Jefferson...

Oh my goodness gwacious me. Nolte was my first thought, but I couldn't visualize him as a painter. I didn't see "New York Stories". And what about the art collector? I didn't see Mulholland Falls, either.

The Golden Bowl is based on a classic novel by Henry James - and Nolte's character is a billionaire art collector.
Cape Fear fits the lawyer/remake/geographic location clues.
What are we missing? Another city?

You've got it, between the two of you! The two cities are Paris (where Jefferson, aka "Mr. pursuit of happiness", was before he was president) and New York (where the Stories were told), the geographic location (and remake) is Cape Fear, and the classic novel is The Golden Bowl.
I leave it to you guys to duke it out as to who goes next.

I'd never have gotten it without Mac's help. Do you have one, Mac?
I never saw "The Golden Bowl" either.
Good question, Bree.

Thanks, Raggedy! I tried to come up with roles that were different from the kinds of roles that Nick Nolte is usually associated with -- and apparently I succeeded!

I'm thinking of someone who fits three of the four roles, but I can't find the fourth. Before I drive myself any crazier, can you tell me if we've used this actor before (assuming you've kept your list)?

My list doesn't show this actor. And I'm surprised that we haven't used him. However, my list could be wrong. My list does show that we've now used Nick Nolte twice. (lol)
Don't drive yourself any crazier. Which actor do you have in mind?

When we first started the occupation/whatever game, I jotted down names so I wouldn't repeat them. I got tired of writing them down so I entered them in my Microsoft Works.

Oops, I had forgotten we'd used Nick Nolte before!
I seem to remember we have used Richard Burton before, so I'm going to stop looking for a movie in which he played a gardener, even though he was a WWII German officer in Massacre in Rome, a real-life revolutionary in The Assassination of Trotsky, and a psychiatrist in Equus.

It doesn't matter if we use the same actor again. If I didn't have the list, you could ask the same actor three times and I wouldn't catch it.
But, yes we did use Burton and it's OK to use him again, however, he's not the actor I have in mind.

Uh-oh: I just saw on Playbill's website that Audra McDonald has cancelled the concert she was supposed to give at the new "Jazz at Lincoln Center" space tonight, because of "severe intestinal flu". Tonight's concert was supposed to be the first of three. A friend and I have tickets for tomorrow night's concert, which Playbill says is still on, at least for now. Here's hoping she makes a speedy recovery (for her sake as well as mine).
In the meantime, I have no idea about your question, so I'll make some guesses in the hope that I'll find a clue waiting for me when I return from my piano lesson.
Dirk Bogarde - gardener in The Spanish Gardener and former WWII German officer in The Night Porter
Brendan Fraser - gardener in Gods and Monsters
Clive Owen - gardener in Greenfingers

Ah, I'm sorry to hear about Audra McDonald. If she is ill tomorrow, will the concert be cancelled or will there be a substitute performer?
As for the gardener: I was just reading a British review of the movie that
says as a monsyllabic gardener when he speaks his accent is so astonishing that it was only beaten nearly 30 years later by Brad Pitt's in Snatch. (lol)
The movie with the gardener uses characters from a novel by the author of your classical novel above.
Go South of the border for the revolutionary.
Dance the tango with the psychiatrist.

The concert will probably be cancelled if she can't make it -- which would be a shame, but preferable to hearing whoever they could dig up at the last minute.
With those clues, how could I not get
Marlon Brando
German officer WWII - The Young Lions
Gardener - The Nightcomers
Real-life revolutionary - Viva Zapata!
Psychiatrist - Don Juan DeMarco
(Do you know, I've never seen any of those movies?)
Must dash for my lesson -- I'll try to check in later tonight, but if not I'll see you tomorrow.

Have a good lesson.
Marlon Brando is correct, of course. And for once, I saw them all. (lol)
