Would that "sort of" movie director be John Houston?
I'll guess Clint Eastwood.
singer - Honky Tonk Man
photographer - The Bridges of Madison County
D.J. - Play Misty for Me
movie director - White Hunter Black Heart

Yes, it would be the middle member of the three-generations-of-Oscar-winners family!
That was obviously too easy -- which one gave it away, or was it all of them?

Don't forget, the Coppolla family became the second to achieve that last year!

I hadn't realized that (the Coppolla family's distinction) until it was the subject of a question on Jeopardy a couple of weeks ago!

My first thought when I saw "singer" was that it might be an actress. Yes, "sort of" gave it away. (lol)
No tie-ins to this question, at least that I'm aware of:
Real-life Naval Commander, WWII
Schoolteacher
Ex-con - (twice that I can recall)
Marine Corporal
Are you up and about, Loislane?

Robert Mitchum
Real-life Naval Commander, WWII - Midway (as Halsey)
Schoolteacher - Ryan's Daughter
Ex-con - Cape Fear and The Friends of Eddie Coyle
Marine Corporal - Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison

Yes to Robert Mitchum. Was it the Marine Corporal that gave that one away or the discussion (I think it was on this thread) with Loislane re "Night of the Hunter"?

Oh, I just noticed you said "Friends of Eddie Coyle" instead of "Night of the Hunter" for the ex-con. I had forgotten about that one. Did you ever see "Night of the Hunter", Bree?

It was the Marine Corporal -- although once I realized it was Mitchum, I wondered if it was the discussion of "Night of the Hunter" that made you think of him.
I'll pass on starting the next round, as I have to go out for a couple of hours.

We crossed posts.
Yes, I did see "Night of the Hunter", a long time ago. I couldn't remember if Mitchum's character in that one had ever actually been in jail, and the other two came to mind right away, which is why I mentioned them instead.

I asked if you saw it because if you hadn't, I was going to recommend it. Although I really hesitate at making recommendations. (lol)
I'll wait unless someone else has a question they'd like to post

But what has me puzzled is that the comic strip character is fictional which makes me think that it is not a character from an actual comic strip.
Since it takes three guesses for a clue, I'll follow up with another guess:
Keanu Reeves:
Baseball coach - Hardball
Lawyer - The Devil's Advocate
Pirate - ??? Maybe, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (never saw it, so wild guess)
Would Johnny Mnemonic qualify for comic-strip character?
Still trying to come up with another guess.

But, I'm not sure about that. If it is an actual comic strip, I have someone who fits the bill, but I'm not going to guess him, because if I'm not right, I'll ask him when it's my turn.

Guess No. 3 for a much-needed clue.
Kevin Costner
Baseball coach - Bull Durham (he coached Tim Robbins)
Lawyer - JFK?
Pirate - Waterworld?
Comic-strip character - ??????
CLUE PLEASE!

Raggedy,
It is an actual comic strip (I was trying to make a joke).
