Young Abe Lincoln - We knew he was going to be President.
Fail Safe and Meteor (Fictional President)
The Best Man - Fictional candidate for U.S. Pres.
The Longest Day - Brig. Gen. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr.

You got them all, plus one I hadn't thought of (Meteor). I was afraid "real-life President" might be a little misleading, since -- as you point out -- he wasn't president during the time period covered by the movie, but that obviously didn't hinder you!

That was a good one, Bree. I just saw the Longest Day not too long ago, and remembered he played Roosevelt's son. But, I forgot about The Best Man. I never saw that one from beginning to end.

Newspaper editor falls for Professor
News reporter marries Russian dancer
News reporter falls for Communist's daughter
Newspaper reporter falls for girl who's story he's after

I hadn't realized he played so many reporters.

(He was also a war correspondent in love with his brother's girl and a newsreel reporter who falls for a girl he meets in Shanghai)

For some reason, my first thought was Melvyn Douglas: I think the "Russian dancer" reference made me think of Ninotchka, but then I remembered Garbo wasn't a dancer in that movie! Then I thought of Gregory Peck, because Roman Holiday could be the one where he falls in love with the girl whose story he's covering, but I haven't worked out what the other movies are yet, and I have to leave for the dentist. This'll give me something to think about while I'm there.

Or, you could "think about that tomorrow". Good luck at the dentist.

OK, now I've got the actor (with that hint, it would be hard not to) and one of the movies. I'll be back when I've worked out the others.

Newspaper editor falls for professor - Teacher's Pet
News reporter marries Russian dancer - Never Let Me Go
News reporter falls for Communist's daughter - Comrade X
Newspaper reporter falls for girl whose story he's after - It Happened One Night

That was a tough one, because the only one of those movies I've seen is It Happened One Night! I'd never even heard of Never Let Me Go. I recently read a novel (An Evening of Long Goodbyes, by Paul Murray) in which the main character is a young man who's obsessed with Gene Tierney. Reading it made me realize how few of her movies I've seen: I think Laura and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir may be the only ones.

I'm sorry if the Gable films were obscure to you. After I posted the question, it dawned on me how old some of them are. I've seen most of them as repeats on TV and some of them on the wide screen. Comrade X was quite popular as it starred Hedy Lamarr as a Russian streetcar motorwoman. Teacher's Pet with Doris Day was quite funny in its time.

Gene Tierney was excellent in her role as one of the most evil women on screen in Leave Her to Heaven (for which she was Oscar nominated) a rather good novel, and as the selfish, egotistial Isabel, in the original Razor's Edge with Tyrone Power and Anne Baxter.

Her personal life was as dramatic and tragic as some of her movie roles. She and Oleg Cassini had a retarded daughter as the result of German measles Tierney contracted during her pregnancy. The child was later sent to an institution and after divorcing Cassini in 1952, and a tragic love affair with Aly Kahn which his father opposed, causing Aly to leave her, she suffered numerous breakdowns eventually being committed herself. She endured shock treatments many times (which she later recounted in her autobiography.) An A&E biography I recently recorded of her showed many scenes of her affair with John F. Kennedy when he was in the navy and which she also mentioned in her autobiography "Self Portrait." Kennedy also rejected her later due to political reasons which she wrote was a terrible blow to her. In 1960 she married an oilman (Lamarr's ex) and made a brief comeback.
Black and white films didn't due her justice. She was beautiful in technicolor in Leave Her to Heaven.
I remember first seeing her as a native girl in Son of Fury with Ty Power, and Tobacco Road, a role entirely out of character for the socialite, and later in The Egyptian and I always enjoyed her performances.

I love finding out about obscure films! Now I'll know to tape Comrade X, or Never Let Me Go, if they ever turn up on AMC.

I'll have to think about the next question.

mac, the picture you posted is almost exactly the same as one I originally tried to post, but it wouldn't work (I just got the red "X" instead), so I went with the one I used instead. I like yours better! And I've been meaning to say, I like your new signature line, too!

I'm stumped for a new question at the moment, so if anyone else has a new one, please go ahead and post it.

Thanks ladies. I like this quote because I can't quite figure out what it means. Very Happy

I've been meaning to tell you, Raggedy - back when we were working on Molly Brown lyrics - hearing the songs again after all these years (25!) brought back my very young self and the crush I had on our Johnny Brown in the community theatre production I worked on. He was a nice guy, but mostly he had the most beautiful voice. I'd completely forgotten that guy. I wonder whatever happened to him.

Mac: I'm thinking that maybe your Johnny Brown was not the man that you thought he was or even the man you thought was the man you thought he was. Very Happy ( Maybe he changed his name and got a role on Broadway in Titanic. If it was only 25 years ago , he'd still be a young man from my viewpoint.)

The entire time I watched Unsinkable Molly Brown, I kept comparing Debbie to Tammy Grimes and several times told her it wasn't necessary to shout., but ....... Rather ironic isn't it that Debbie's smash hit record was Tammy, seven years earlier.
