It's delightful here today -- spring at last.

I need to think about the next scene. Back in a little while.

Oldie

A man walks into an antiquarian bookstore and asks the clerk if she has "a Ben-Hur 1860, Third Edition with a duplicated line on page 116." The man isn't really shopping for books, but asks the question to conceal his real reason for being in the bookstore.

I'm off to lunch -- back in an hour (or so) to answer questions/confirm correct guess.

It's so familiar. I'm thinking it's probably in the mystery genre, but I'll start out with a wild guess:

Shop Around the Corner?

Not Shop Around the Corner

Your thinking about the genre is correct.

Not The 39 Steps (and not Robert Donat -- although he was so easy on the eyes, I can understand why you'd want to see him!)

Not Saboteur

Clue: the leading actor and actress in this movie were married to each other in real life.

The Big Sleep is correct. Was that clue too obvious?

I was thinking it might be Bogart and your clue confirmed it. I pictured him in the bookshop speaking with a lisp and wearing glasses, but I didn't remember the book, Ben Hur. You have a great memory.

Here's another Oldie:

While sitting on the couch with a young girl , he spots an incriminating article in the newspaper she's holding. He takes the paper from her and tears out the article on the pretense that he wants to show her a trick with the paper.

I have to confess, I found the "Ben Hur" line of dialogue on a wonderful website called "The Greatest Films", which has detailed plot synopses and extensive quotations from hundreds of movies. If you haven't been there, you should definitely check it out:

The Greatest Films

(But be warned: I don't think I've ever gotten more pop-up ads than I get when I go to that website.)

I'm pretty sure I know the movie your scene is from, because it's one of my all-time favorites:

Shadow of a Doubt?

I won't be able to post another scene until tomorrow: I have to finish up something at work, then dash off to my piano lesson, then go home and wallow in front of the TV for two hours of "Friends" tonight.

If anyone wants to take the next turn in the meantime, please go ahead.
