Husker,

I come from a non pet family. My mother hated cats (they sit on kids in baby carriages) and loved dogs, but my parents moved fairly often and were financially stressed when I was in my teens, and so...no pets. I worked in a lab in my early twenties, and carried guinea pigs in my pockets (no, no, I didn't do anything crueler that make antiserum by injecting them with gamma globulin, which we all have anyway...) and one day started sneezing my head off, more than usual. Actually I started sneezing in history class, another story.

So eventually I got tested and found out I was allergic to 64 things, including dogs and cats.

Time passed, and when I had an art studio to live and work in after work...
I got a puppy, and yep, I was allergic, sneeze, snarfle, but oh, I loved that puppy.

Married the fellow I met there, and he arrived at our place with two cats, a mom (Cin Que) and son (Spackle). Sneeze, sneeze, sneeze, sneeze, beginning wheeze....

and then he found an irish setter in a lumber yard...the dog had been hanging around for days, and he brought him home to feed him and find him a home, and of course, the dog was home, sneeze.

Plus we lived in Venice, home of mold and damp, sneeze, snarfle, sneeze.

Hard to count the antihistamines I took, or the allergy shots.

We remodeled in the early nineties and somehow that vaporized most of the mold, and by that time the cats and dogs had passed away and so did the marriage. And... I started itching but not sneezing. Well, let me not belabor that..creepy thing, itching. But I found out I could control it with one Benedryl from Costco (25 mg, I think), at about $4.00 for 200, or some similar low cost.

Now I live far away in a very damp area and have one hairy dog. Sneeze once in a while, and wheeze in winter, once in a while. Am not allergic to the dog. (huh?) Haven't taken even a benedryl in months. Am sneezing today, since I have been cleaning, but not usually.

My point... your allergies may pass enoughover time so you can be around dogs and cats, which are usually more allergy triggers.

I used to visit people with cats and go nuts, sneezing and talking. Now I can be at someone's house with cats for several hours before I eventually sneeze. Has something to do with a tolerance curve, with overload level changing over time.

Hope, there is hope.
