@Old Goat,
OK, that url has TNT tee vee in it, that's Turner Network Television.

A web search shows that Nurse Jackie is by Showtime, another of the networks created to exploit the cable market.

Here's Showtime's home page for Nurse Jackie.

I did some research on Southland. It was originally produced by the WB Network (Warner Brothers television), and sold to NBC (National Broadcasting Corporation, one of the "Big Three"). NBC dicked around with it and then cancelled, so TNT (Turner Network Television) bought it.

@Setanta,
I've just read your long post, Set. Fascinating. There's a guy with foresight!

It just shows......if you put intelligent shows on, aimed at adults.....they will come. (slight misquote from field of dreams).

In the UK, there's a watershed of 9pm, no bums, titties or swearing before that time. After 9pm, pretty much anything goes except hardcore.
There's been a bit of blurring re the watershed lately, and they are currently trying to get the TV companies back in line, which isn't a bad thing.

It's heartening to see this real quality stuff being made in the US.

@Old Goat,
Cable is definitely the reason. In the 1970s, a lot of local affiliate television stations (i.e., affiliated with one of the big three--NBC, CBS or ABC) actually advertised against and attempted to prevent cable television companies from coming into their markets. Yeah . . . go piss into the wind. Their big slogan was "Advertiser-supported, free television" . . . as if you didn't pay for it every time you went to the store.

Turner was smart enough to see which way the wind was blowing. I don't know who it was at HBO who saw the potential for quality programming, but whoever she or he was, changed the American television landscape forever.

Here's a Nurse Jackie Promo trailer.....it goes a bit weird in the middle but gives you a flavour of what it's all about.

WARNING. Swearing and mild naughties.

Just wondering if anyone's mentioned "Hung" yet? (HBO)

Now, another male's genitalia doesn't usually interest me, apart from the delicious French dish made from bull penis, but Hung is really quite good. Funny, sad, naughty, cringemakingly embarrassing, thought provoking and addictive.
Trailers 1 and 2.

Adult content. Males with 5 inches or less may experience a sense of intimidation.

Thinking ahead.
I'm now in the (early) process of watching MadMen, series 4.
And an looking for my next HBO series to follow that. (It's looking like being a long, cold winter here. Lots of watching time ahead!)
True Blood?
I've read good reports of it here.
Would a person who really liked MadMen & Ten Feet Under also enjoy True Blood, do you think?
I have an excellent video rental place I frequent. I'm sure they'd have it.

@msolga,
Definitely give it a go, Olga. Mr. M, and I are huge fans of Mad Men and we also loved Six Feet Under. True Blood is a great series. It's based on the "Sookie Stackhouse" novels written by Charlene Harris. It's a hugely popular series. Here's a very basic synopsis:

"Based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris, True Blood follows the relationship between a southern waitress (Sookie) and her soul mate Bill Compton, who happens to be a 173-year-old vampire. Taking place in the future, vampires have come out of their 'coffins' and live among humans thanks to the creation of synthetic blood, which enables them to live without needing to feed off humans.

As these vampires try to create their own niche in society, they face some serious opposition from organizations who feel that these creatures have no place in their society. They also live in fear of being drained of their own blood by humans looking to get high. As it turns out, vampire blood (also called 'V') works as an extremely powerful drug similar to the effects of ecstasy and heroin.

When vampire Bill comes to the fictional town of Bon Temps, Sookie immediately forms a romantic bond and a relationship develops."

YES!!!

(Alan Ball, the creator of Six Feet Under, is also the creator of True Blood. (And of the movie American Beauty, which you might also like.)

@mckenzie,
Thank you very much for your response, mckenzie.
For the all information & also for going to the trouble of finding Thomas's thread & posting it here.
For a while I thought it was a vampire series! Razz (As opposed to a series with a vampire character in it.)
OK, I am definitely interested now.
It is next on my viewing list.
I have just one more disc of series 4 of Mad Men to go (which I'm galloping through at a great pace) & then I'll definitely check it out & report back.

Ha. I'll take that as an endorsement, Thomas! Smile
And yes, I loved American Beauty, too.
Sounds like I'll be on the right track with this one, too!

@msolga,
Indeed. I normally eschew such stuff, but I'm hooked on this. Thank heavens series three is better than series two, whose main storyline was dumb.
