Does anyone think the US will be able to bully/bribe/cajole/entice/threaten enough of the security council to get the 9 votes needed? If so, does anyone think Russia or France will not excercise their veto? Personally I don't think there is a snowball in hells chance of getting a vote for war through the security council. That might not be a problem for Dubbya as he never wanted to go the UN route in the first place, but its absolutely critical for Blair. He persuaded Bush to go the UN route as adding legitimacy to the project, and if it doesnt endorse a military strike, I don't see how Blair can go ahead anyway with any credibility at all.
Tres, I'd someone as studied as you are about semantic precision would not put words in another's mouth. No, I didn't say you were a "bad person" - I'd be insane to think I could glean enough just from this forum to know or judge same.
I said you were needlessly cynical in your responses for no obvious reason besides insult. It's my opinion, and I'm sure you don't share it. But ain't that what makes America great?
That should have read "I'd think that someone as studied as you..."
Steve, I never realized that Bush wished to have credibility or for that matter, legitimacy. That's not important to him!
snood, I am a combat veteran, and to my knowledge - the only grunt!
Bush-credibility um well Turkey held out for cash on the barrel head refusing to accept promises, perhaps a lesson learned from Afghanistan?
Mexico held out for work permits! What did Powell give China - permission to kill more dissidents or free access to Taiwan?
Steve -- I'm really encouraged to hear you say that. The media over here have "decided" he'll get the vote. On the other hand, the first place I got that news was last night in today's Guardian (and posted it a ways back). I'd like to see Bush not get it because then if/when the war goes really badly for him, he'd have no one to blame except himself. Blair would get just what he deserves. I am anti-American in this respect: I don't want to see any friends beyond our shores and borders pay a price just because we have a psycho on the loose.
BillW, I was a 'grunt' too, and I consider myself in good company. c.i.
Just had some interesting readings in linked sites from the
War Report
a site, with articles, key documents, and analyses compiled and frequently updated by the Project on Defense Alternatives.
Walter -- That's an enormously useful site, not one I'd ever seen before. Many thanks.
But of course, it's "useful" only to those of us who refuse to go along with the concept that repeated assertions about skullduggery are sufficient -- truth is not necessary.
Walter and Tartar, Now that both of you have read or skimmed through these "studies and opinions," can you share with us the meat and potato of these articles? Getting lazy in my old age.
c.i.
According to some news agencies, the people of the Middle East are protesting against the US war with Iraq. One of this administration's reasons for going to war with Iraq is to bring democracy to the Middle East. I wonder who's wishes should be considered and trusted? c.i.
Walter
War Report great link thanks. And produced only 30 mi away from here!
Tartarin
I think we are "singing from the same hymn sheet"
CI Meat and potatoes Jeez am I hungry. Will read the article and digest it for you later.
You are going to have to do it yourself, c.i. The first page has over 100 links. The first link I followed contained many (uncounted) links itself, and they were each to a complete article. At least at first glance, it appeared a balanced presentation. Have fun.
Steve
Code:And produced only 30 mi away from here!
That's how I found it
(You noticed the "MA", did you?)
Code:balanced presentation
Yes.
Depends on the kind of your humour.
thanks c.i., the company is grand!
