Big sigh.

Oy. That sucks.

Email was a good idea -- if that's not possible, perhaps bring a plain old pad of paper and a pen? You can go ahead and write questions you may have ahead of time and flash 'em, then write supplementary stuff when you're there.

I do this when I have to meet people face to face. It doesn't work on the phone. I really don't want to have to go all the way to the hospital to ask a question about an appointment. So I'll call and gag.

@Roberta,
Still reading and sending hugs, Boida. Even though I don't post often you are very much in my thoughts.

@Roberta,
Oh, I see. I misunderstood... I thought you meant that you had to straighten something out AT the appointments.

Why don't they have email?! That's extremely irritating. I do pretty much everything medical appt-wise via email these days.

@sozobe,
Could a friend come over and be a sort of oral interpreter? Friend talks on the phone, tells you what the hospital people say, you write to friend?

JPB, Good to hear from you.

Soz, No, I don't have a friend who can come over and do the talking for me. And I don't know why the hospital won't accept e-mail from patients, but I can imagine that the system would be overwhelmed. I asked the man in finance about e-mail. He said no, it was a privacy issue.

I managed to straighten out the appointment problem without gagging. Then I got a call from my cousin. That's when I gagged--choking, gasping, etc.

@Roberta,
Come to think of it, if I were running a huge municipal hospital with thousands upon thousands of patients from many ethnic groups, I don't think I would want the administrative staff tied up with answering e-mails.

But e-mails in a smaller-scale facility seem like a supoib idea.

@Roberta,
The emailing I do is by special dispensation -- they don't normally do email but they realize it's the easiest way to communicate with me (and they DO have email, and it took some cajoling in some situations). The main one is an ENORMOUS hospital.

If you can't talk without gagging, seems like a similar special dispensation could be made.

But if not, then not. <fatalistic shrug>

Sounds like it's past tense anyway -- that what needed to be figured out has been figured?

@Roberta,
Yes...there're also legal issues. Say a patient emails you that they are ill, and you do not get to your emails (as you don't when you are busy) so you don't respond.....and there is a bad outcome.....

You may be held responsible.

I hate it when clients get my email.

But, for the likes of Soz and any gaggers, that's different.

Only two zaps to go?

Well, hurry up and happen, zaps.

@sozobe,
A special dispensation, soz? A big difference. I'm glad they do it for you.

Assuming I could get such a dispensation, by the time I got it worked out, I probably wouldn't need it anymore. This gagging/talking chazerai was one of the last things to arrive. I'm optimistic (did I say that? Yes, I did) in thinking that it will be one of the first things to go.

I managed to get the appointments worked out because I can say a few words without gagging/choking. It's long sentences and conversations that give me trouble.

Yes, deb, two zaps to go. Get thee by me zaps.

@Roberta,
Well, of course. Or maybe its "of course not". Getting any kind of dispensation on emails would take more gagged conversation than it would save.

@Roberta,
Somewhere it's already Roberta's birthday.
Somewhere it's always Roberta's birthday.
Somewhere the zaps are already over.

Of course, that would be an encouraging word, so I won't be mentioning it.

Good grief, Boidy, sorry for calling. The sound of your voice actually made me feel a kind of empathy pain. Also, the thought of you not being able to talk is just too much to comprehend!! Still, I know you well enough to know that you will find a way to kvetch no matter what. One of the many reasons I love you.

I haven't been on a2k for so long that I've lost track of everything and everybody. I now realize that I should at least check in on your progress. These happenings , horrible events, goddam problems are coming at you too fast to take in.

I am praying for you in my own way. Prayers, good thoughts, they all have a positive effect on the people we love.

And finally, a virtual Happy Birthday!! The imagination is fantastic for having good things that aren't real. Taste, company, the smoke from blown out candles can be brought so easily to mind. Since real chocolates aren't on your menu at present, I'll be wishing you a pudding made by the best chef in the world. In fact, I think I'll keep him close at hand for when you are feeling well enough to eat anything you crave.

Love you, my friend.
