@Rockhead,
Do I know why I need a prescription for salt water? I assume it's because I have to breathe it.

Thanks for the sympathy and the dirty words, RH.

@Roberta,
I'd be all over some distilled water, sea salt, and a percentage, but I'm kinda skeery that way...

you are welcome to my collection of obscenities any time you need one...

@Rockhead,
Ouch, and other words.

Can you call the asthma people and ask if you can do it yourself, as Rockhead said and I'd be tempted to do (definitely with distilled). You'd think the asthma types would have an on-call person..
Or maybe they could call a prescription to the pharmacy since they did the goof.
Of course, maybe not.

@Roberta,
They probably want extremely purified water and saline so all the various microbes and other junk in our city waters are removed.

Remember the stories in the last couple of years warning people about using tap water with their neti pots and the deaths of someone using tap water?

http://www.forbes.com/sites/daviddisalvo/2012/08/27/how-not-to-die-using-a-neti-pot/

Excerpt:

Quote:
Specifically, instructions that come with the products often leave out the all-important requirement that you DO NOT USE TAP WATER in your Neti. Tap water contains trace amounts of bacteria and protozoa, which is usually not a problem when you drink the water because your stomach acid does its job. But, when you are mainlining those organisms into your nasal passages, exceptionally bad outcomes can result.

If you do use tap water water, make sure you’ve boiled it for several minutes to kill whatever might be lurking in there. Better yet, only use sterilized or distilled water.

Below are details from the FDA report on proper use and maintenance of Neti pots to avoid illness or worse.

What types of water are safe to use in nasal rinsing devices?

Distilled or sterile water, which you can buy in stores. The label will state “distilled” or “sterile.”
Boiled and cooled tap water—boiled for 3-5 minutes, then cooled until it is lukewarm. Previously boiled water can be stored in a clean, closed container for use within 24 hours.
Water passed through a filter with an absolute pore size of 1 micron or smaller, which traps potentially infectious organisms. CDC has information on selecting these filters, which you can buy from some hardware and discount stores, or online.

@Butrflynet,
Here, you can buy distilled water....for steam irons....in supermarkets. You can also buy normal saline, for cleaning contact lenses....in pharmacies. If it goes in your eyes it ought to be ok in your lungs? I could buy hospital drip bags of saline at the chemist....might this be an option.Boida?

So sorry to hear about all this.

@dlowan,
osso, No, the pharmacist can call Bellevue. But reaching my doctor is a whole other matter. My last doctor is gone. I've never met my current doctor.

Deb, The pharmacist told me that the saline for contact lenses is not the right kind for a nebulizer solution.

The bottle of the nebulizer solution is minscule. I don't need much saline. However, the medication says to create a solution according to the instructions from my doctor. Don't got no instructions.

I'll find out on Wed. what I'm supposed to do.

Who knew that breathing could become such a production?

Roberta already knows this, but I told her I'd make this public beforehand. I'm going to borrow her thread to do it because I don't want to make a big deal of it in an effort to lessen BBB's anxiety about it.

I am scheduled for some surgery on Monday, August 12th (tomorrow) so I won't be around the day before or a few days after. For a week after that, my ability to sit at the computer for any length of time will be limited.

Will be at the hospital at 6:00am, surgery at 7:30. If things go according to plan, I should be back at home by noon. Diane and BBB will be there with me and Diane will be helping BBB take care of me for at least the first 24 hours when I get home.

I am having a bariatric lap band surgery much like the one Chris Christie had. Have lost 27 pounds already as part of the six-month pre-op diet and testing process for it.

If I feel up to it, I'll post something with my cell phone when I am at home again. If not, I'm sure either BBB or Diane will do so.

Thanks for letting us know! You'll be in my thoughts tomorrow, and I hope everything goes smoothly and you recover quickly. I'll be interested in hearing how things go over the next few months!

@Butrflynet,
I'm very confident your surgery will go well. Nevertheless, my best thoughts will be with you. With BBB too.

Hey BFN best wishes!

And hope that saline solution appears somehow, Roberta.

For what it's worth, I regularly made a saline solution to flush sozlet's nasal cavities, the first step was to boil bottled water (not tap water). Then add kosher salt and a pinch of baking soda.

(Then let it cool off. Boiling water is not pleasant in nasal cavities.)

I get that lungs are extra-sensitive though.

I am home, surgery went well. I am new owner of a bariatric lap band and temp owner of an oxygen tank until pain subsides and I get more oxygen on my own. Surgery took longer due to unexpected hiatîl hernia repair. Pain is not nearly as severe as 2007 surgery. Bless the pain med inventors- need sleep, no sleep last night. Meds kicking in, time to sleep.

Thanks all for the good thoughts. Have lost 27 pounds already and have lots more to go. Am sure I will need your support along the way. I couldn't let Chris Christie have all the glory!
