Schwarzenegger Announces Gubernatorial Bid
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Arnold Schwarzenegger ended the suspense Wednesday and said he would run in California's recall election, awarding Republicans his marquee value in their campaign to oust Gov. Gray Davis. Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein ruled out a run, labeling the election "more and more like a carnival every day." Schwarzenegger's announcement came as a surprise; advisers had said in recent days that was leaning against running in the Oct. 7 election.

Arnold is going to be prime red meat for the press. He's carrying an enormous amount of baggage for a prospective politico.

Larry Flint and Arianna Huffington are seriously thinking about it too.

I've heard several hundred people have registered. But I think Arnold can win, baggage or not.

Arianna has declared as an independent.

Arnold's got name recognition.

That's it.

I'd like to hear his answer to California's budget woes.

Not to mention his marijuana usage, his numerous inappropriate relationships with women prior to his marriage, his father being a Nazi MP Sergeant major, yada, yada, yada....

This is really great for the "Caifornia Image":

He announced on the Tonight Show. Told Jay that this was the toughest decision he's had to make since he decided to have a bikini wax in the '70's!

People vote for weird reasons.

Personally, if a republican has to win, I'd much rather see someone like Arnold win then let Issa be rewarded with "purchasing" the recall for himself.

If it looks like Gray Davis has absolutely no chance in hell of winning, I might even consider voting for Arnold just to keep Issa from getting it.

Dinners at the Kennedy Compound will be very interesting for the next couple of months. Would love to be a fly on the wall.

Second that Kennedy fly comment, Butrflynet!

Plus, Arnold is pretty moderate... The weird thing is-- the main Cali problem is state finances. Wouldn't you want someone with a clue into budgets and state fiscal issues?

I think Feinstein and Boxer really made a mistake on this one.

I agree with Sophia. He can win. My gut says he will win.

I'm okay with Feinstein not running. We really need her in DC.

And yes, It's funny.

Note to self: Getting a bikini wax is TOUGHER
than running for office.

I'm a tough guy. Hmmm...

Maybe I should start with the easy stuff first, and just become governor.

I retract that statement. Things are so tight in DC--nobody should give up a seat. Wonder if there are any lib celebrities being coaxed to run--to dilute the Arnold vote? Will Arianna run strong? She does have TVQ, but not rivalling Arnold.

sofia, given the current condition of california both in terms of its economic crisis and its legislature can you think of any reason to want to be govenor?

Absolutely not! Unless I was incredibly strong in administration, and I wanted to turn the state around and go for the Big Job in 4 to 8. It would be a great stepping stone for the right person. A complete nightmare for everyone else.
