Is that holding your breath and trying to blow at the same time?
Like...putting your thumb in your moth and sealing it, then blowing hard????
yep. They compoare it to the forcing of air in yer throat as if yer trying to crap out an iron rivet
What does the Val Salva procedure have to do with defibrilation?
It stops it as well as a 50000 surgical procedure. (And lasts just as long) Seems that physicians arent above jacking us off for some extra cash
Isn't the at defrib a heart-beat issue?

I get the odd flutter when stressed.
My GP told me about that technique years and years ago.
Well, when one is in AT fib almost all the time, it gets annoying and (were I a serious worrier----ok I am a serious worrier) Id be more concerned. But having e-mailed some physician friends and having them work out some details, I am convinced that one can live with at fib and live a ripe old fart age, just with a syncopated beat.
Id be like MILES , cooooooool
Syncopation, fibrillation, composition...
sinus rhythm, what a gassss.
Now they want me to go in for some exploratory surgery on Dec 10. Im told that they may use a laser to correct this and then they will shock my heart into sinus rhythm.
I dont know, I think I should cause its not getting any better , the VAlSalva seems to work for only a few minutes.
Farmerman--
Is this Slice You Open Surgery or Run A Roto-Rooter Surgery?
As I understand, its a "open up a peep hole, insert some tiny equipment up into his heart and then turn the sucker on" kind of surgery
I guess I think this is a good move. (Such an expert she sounds.)
The very best of Royal Canajun luck!
Yep (best o' luck). I hope this solves the problem.

I admire your scientific detachment--and wish the surgeon a steady hand (and reliable power supply).
Sigh. I'll be thinking of you on Dec. 10....... Damn. Why can't all of us just be totally healthy for a good long stretch?
Sounds like you and Dick Cheney are having similar procedures. Hope things go as well for you, Farmerdude.
Quote:Cheney's Heart Restored to Normal Rhythm
By TERENCE HUNT - 17 hours ago
WASHINGTON (AP) ?- Doctors administered an electrical shock Monday to Vice President Dick Cheney's heart and restored it to a normal rhythm. Cheney went home from George Washington University Hospital after the procedure was declared a success. Cheney, who has a history of heart problems, spent about 2 1/2 hours at the hospital after experiencing an irregular heartbeat early in the day.
The condition was detected when Cheney was seen by doctors around 7 a.m. at the White House for a lingering cough from a cold. He remained at work throughout the day, joining President Bush in meetings with Mideast leaders.
"During examination he was incidentally found to have an irregular heartbeat, which on further testing was determined to be atrial fibrillation, an abnormal rhythm involving the upper chambers of the heart," said spokeswoman Megan Mitchell. He went to the hospital about 5 p.m. and was discharged about 7:30 p.m.
About 2.8 million Americans have atrial fibrillation, the most common type of irregular heartbeat, and cases are increasing as the population ages.
The condition occurs when the heart's top chambers, called the atria, get out of sync with the bottom chambers' pumping action. It is not immediately life-threatening, and the heart sometimes gets back into rhythm on its own. Many times, patients aren't aware of an episode of atrial fibrillation.
But if the irregular heartbeat continues, it eventually can cause a life-threatening complication ?- the formation of blood clots that can shoot to the brain and cause a stroke.
The main treatment is to try an electrical shock to restore normal heartbeat. If that doesn't work, patients may need to take the blood thinner warfarin to reduce stroke risk.
"An electrical impulse was used to restore the upper chambers to normal rhythm," Mitchell said. "The procedure went smoothly and without complication. The vice president has returned home and will resume his normal schedule tomorrow at the White House."
The Vice-President makes a useful guinea pig.
