I once saw an interview with Edward Woodward who told the story of his first audition. Sitting in on the audition was Dame Sybil Thorndike (or, if not her, some other grande dame of British theatre, who spoke with a mouth full of plums - the epitome of Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest). He was very nervous. When asked, he managed to give his name.
"Edward Woodward!!" exclaimed the Dame, "Sounds like someone farting in the bath!"
