Here are the best marriage proposal stories I have heard.

A man originally from Montreal, took his girlfriend "home" for Christmas where they went to the top of Mount Royal and he proposed there, with his favorite city all around them.

A couple, each divorced and in what was developing into a long time relationship, were talking about marrying and having a family. One Saturday morning, she heard a knock on the door. It was a hired limo and the driver had a personal message for her. That was the beginning of a scavenger hunt in which several of her friends and relatives participated. I do not remember all the details but the trip took her past the house she lived in as a child and the elementary school she attended as well as to the restaurant where they had their first date. Her closest friend was waiting for her with a pile of bridal magazines. The hunt ended at a B&B on the ocean where the concierge told her to go out to the beach where her boyfriend waited with a bottle of champagne.

The last story involved an art teacher and a lawyer with political ambitions. He had been talking about moving to the district in which he grew up and buying a home there so that he could run for office. He had asked her if she would like to live there and she said that it sounded like a nice place. In December, he said to her that he had seen a house he liked and would she like to drive past it and offer her opinion. She said yes and they drove up to a house with a for sale sign. He suggested they take a closer look and she nervously suggested that perhaps they should go back with the realtor. He asked if she would just come out and see the yard. At the back of the house, he walked up to the door while she wondered what he was doing. He nonchalantly pretended it was unlocked. They went inside and in the living room of the empty house was a decorated Christmas tree with one present -- a tiny ring box -- under it.
