But there are variations we refer to as 'race'. That may be inaccurate, but we cannot deny that significant distrust and hatred exists between these variations. We could speak of 'variationism', but folks would look at us funny, don't you think?
We English can be proud that we've taken in millions of immigrants from all over the world.

Well Americans should be proud that "millions of immigrants" have made America what it is, even though the original colonists were English. But, I suspect the colonists were not like the "across the pond" English, since they had the good sense to give the Monarchy the proverbial finger.
But you remain "proud." Historical pride might be all that's left for the English to feel good about?

Different types of racism, i remember my uncle telling me a story which always comes to mind: A guy from england whose ancestors were from india was telling irish jokes, so in good faith he told an indian joke, everyone laughed at both, soon after he got pulled by management for telling a racist joke which offended a minority (the complainee wasn't the english guy with indian heritage) at which point he said he was the only irish guy in the room and the telling of irish jokes was also offensive and racist, if he had not said this out he would have been sacked and branded a racist.
To me a racist is someone who goes out of their way to belittle, hurt, demean an individual out of no other reason than a persons origins of birth. The source of this problem is education, ignorance, environment, poverty and peership.
If immigrants are cheeky enough to desert their own countries to come and take the jobs, housing and welfare benefits of another country, of course they're going to get called names by some sectors of the home-grown population..
