Black wedding dress

Reply Wed 11 Jul, 2007 03:34 pm
I am getting married on Oct 31, 2008 and my fiance' and I have decided to have a black and white wedding. We are wearing black, the wedding party is wearing white. I found black wedding dresses online, but they are all renaissance style. Although I love history, I want a dress that is in the present. Can anyone give me advice as to where I could find a designer to make a dress for me? I am in the USA. Question

Do you really need a designer or do you just need a seamstress?

If you have an idea of the dress you want you probably just need a seamstress. They're everywhere. Call a good local fabric shop and they'll probably hook you up with several.

She'll (or He'll) work with you to find a pattern, help pick fabric, and custom fit it to you.

Yeah, I have though of that. It would be cheaper. The thing is I live in MS. The dress I want is a complicated St. Pucci design. I wish my Fiance' would let me wear a white dress, but he said it would throw off the whole opposite black and white thing. Who knew a man could care so mcch about the color scheme of a wedding!!!

"Let you"?

If he's wearing black it's not opposite -- that's standard. He'd need to wear a white suit. Does he want to?

(I realize that doesn't answer your question -- my answer might be "why not get the one you want and either dye it black yourself or have it professionally dyed" -- but the sentence "I wish my Fiance' would let me wear a white dress" set me back a bit. If you want to wear a white dress, wear a white dress!)

I Googled "Black wedding dress" and there were over 4 MILLION hits including some designers of wedding apparel.

Is MS Misissippi? I would imagine you find more local seamstress' than designers anywhere, including Misissippi.

Weddings were invented by women for women to annoy women- wear whatever you want. Men are there as supporting players, the bride is the show. If he really gives you a hard time about this, you have waaay more problems than finding someone to make you a black dress.
(psst: tell him he is acting "gay")

black for the couple, white for the wedding party

ricksang - I suspect you'll be able to find a good seamstress/tailor in most parts of the U.S. Have you looked around for one? Have you got a particular design/pattern you could show us, so we could try to help you find a similar dress?

(designer's don't usually make the dresses themselves - they have seamstresses/tailors who do that work for them)

When you say "in the present" - can you be a bit more specific about the style details you're interested in.

I got that, but every wedding I've been to has been black suit for the groom, white dress for the bride. I know that some get married in white suits but black suit is standard.

dress number 9237. I could not get the pic to cut and paste. My fiance' is in no way overbearing or gay lol. I would not marry him if either were so. I like that he has a opinion. Yes, there are many black wedding dresses on the web, but not what I want. I don't like the ball gown style. It would swallow my 5ft small frame. Do you think this dress would be too hard to make?
Do you all think it would cheaper or more expensive to recreate in black?

I am in love with this dress!!!!!

Looks like a variant on a mermaid tail.

You should be able to buy (or have made) a dress like that for a LOT less than that retail price.

That gives me hope. 4000 or more is a little to much for a dress I will be wearing for a day!!!!

Have you looked through pattern books in sewing stores? They often copy the big designers. A quality seamstress/pattern maker could do a good copy. Do you have any fashion design schools in your city? In New York there is The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and such a place might be able to give you a referral.

Here is a vintage (1940's) version on ebay.

I think it will be easier to find it if you think of it as a party dress you'll be wearing as a wedding dress, rather than searching for a wedding dress that happens to be black.

Yes, I was just looking... I think you are actually looking for a black gown. Evening Gown. Mermaid or Sheath. You have alot to choose from!
Here's one site
Edit: that link takes you to one I was looking at, not neccassarily what you had in mind.... customized, get to pick color
ah, select dresses, shop by silhouette...

Well, it's not all that popular over the years for a bride to wear a black gown...

but who am I to talk. I wore a black tux suit (w/skirt) from Saks 5th Avenue and what may have been my last damned pair of spike heels - I was looking at their sale rack, really liked the suit... and my husband wore a white suit, which is what he found that fit and he liked. It was a tiny wedding and fun.

I don't get not wearing what you want to to your wedding, not being "let" to.
In my personal fine opinion, your wearing a sleek white or cream colored gown wouldn't ruin any composition.

Why not find a good seamstress and see what she says when you show her the pix of the dress you want. or professionally dye the white dress version of it?

And as a professional photographer who has done many B&W-themed weddings, in no way does the wearing of a white gown spoil the theme. insisting on a black gown is just arbitrary and wrong-headed.

I am reminded of the indian clothing websites Beth and I used to browse through. You could totally customize your outfit. Bridal Lenghas are two-piece and there are often options for making the skirt have a fishtail.Semi-Custon-able Indian Clothing Store

hey guys, if ricksang is ok with wearing a black wedding gown, who are we to say if it's wrong or right? We're not the one's getting married.

I agree with others that you may not necessarily want a wedding gown, but some type of elegant "little black dress"

Since you're wedding is more than a year away, you may very well change your mind several times about that particular dress you've picked out. Maybe pick out the 2 or 3 main things you like about the dress, and concentrate on that.

Googling black wedding dress in images...didn't see anything really memorable, however, not for this situation, just as an observation, I found this black AND white gown interesting...

How would you fiance feel about both of you wearing black AND white?

I notice you're wedding is on Halloween, does that have something to do with the colors?

I think any of the black dresses below would be elegant to get married in...
