What doesn't make sense to me is how she says the incident happened "when we weren't no bigger then..." (so, when they were small and young)...and then later, the man refers to her as "old woman."

No, it's "w'en he warn't no bigga 'an..." ("When he wasn't any bigger than...")

...and "Old Woman" is slang for female-in-domesticity. Men--black and white--still talk about "my old lady".

Here's Tex Ritter singing in dialect.

I'd say it's more poor southern dialect than black, though.

The "fiah" is particularly distinctive.

I'm slow, but...

Quote:
an' me a-trim'lin' like ole Uncle Noah w'en de mistry strike 'im."

If "mistry" is "misery" and the state is Louisiana the "misery" is not rheumatism (which is likely in the North) but malaria. One of the symptoms of malaria is chills and fever. The chills cause shivering.

In the movie "Jezebel" with Bette Davis and Henry Fonda, what was the "misery" depicted in New Orleans during that time? Was it smallpox? I seem to recall a "yellow fever" or something like that.

I wonder if Blanche's last name is DuBois. After all, she is relying upon the kindness of strangers here . . .
