I accidentally damaged my big toe nail.It came loose and Icaught it on something and ripped the nail right off.I went to A & E and they said it was clean but as I did not have the nail with me I would need to keep the fold of skin at the base of my open and pulled back. They put a small piece of foil in at the base where the nail would have been. They said I would need to keep it like that for 5 days to keep it open.Does this mean that if I remove the foil it would close over and the nail would not grow or if it closed would the nail start to grow and cause futher trouble.

you can remove the foil. the matrix of your nailbed with keratinize and your nail will grow back in.

It must be hurting like hell; even I have gone through this so I can understand. You need to cover and disinfect the wound otherwise it can easily get infection. When my nail broke I used a solution to clean the wound and then I pasted bactigras over it. Within 2 weeks it healed.
I hope your nail grows back again.
Bye
