I accidentally damaged my big toe nail.It came loose and Icaught it on something and ripped the nail right off.I went to A & E and they said it was clean but as I did not have the nail with me I would need to keep the fold of skin at the base of my open and pulled back. They put a small piece of foil in at the base where the nail would have been. They said I would need to keep it like that for 5 days to keep it open.Does this mean that if I remove the foil it would close over and the nail would not grow or if it closed would the nail start to grow and cause futher trouble.
Man, I'll bet that really hurt.
What's this foil you're placing on your naked toe?
Hi Miller,Thanx for responding. In A&E at my local hospital,a practice nurse said I would have to keep the fold of skin at the base of my nail open. Its the skin around the edge of the nail at the point were the nail begins at the base. She said I would have to keep pulling the skin back and she took a piece of foil which was wrapped on another sterile instrument, cut it in the shape of a nail and pushed it in at the base of my nail to resemble an artificial nail. This HURT and was uncomfortable so I removed it because I was not happy about how hygenic or germ free it was.
almost two years ago i tore my thumbnail off at work
the nail bed was split and stitched and the thumb was kept wrapped, with daily dressing changes for about a week and a half, after about six months i had a nice new (if slightly thicker) nail
the foil thing sounds really strange
Hi djjd62,Thanx for the advice and info about your own nail.It helps a lot.Like you I think the foil thing was bizarre. Was not happy about it at all.I am applying daily dressings and it is spotlessly clean,no sign of infection. You people are great and very supportive.Thanx
Once I lost a toe nail ( big toe ) and just kept it clean and bandgaged for several weeks to allow the nail to grow back.
Nothing wrong with that, I assume.
Hi again Miller,I agree with you and I am doing what you have mentioned ..minus..the foil.
I too damaged my thumbnail. I managed to ram a 5 mm (1/4 inch) wide 30 mm (1 inch) long piece of wood under my nail. The doctor surcially (under local anesthetic) removed the nail then the splinter. A dressing and 48 hours of panadol forte followed. My nail grew back with a linear bump in it because of the damage to the nail bed.
I think I'd be checking with the clinic or another doctor about the foil.

Be sure to keep the area clean and if you see redness or a little pus easing out, see a health care person.
I guess the function of that foil is to make any possible exudation flow out unobstructed.
Hi Bluestblue,Thanx for responding, you could be right.Anyway the area is very clean and I will be seeing a Chiropodist soon.I appreciate you help.
I got goosebumps just thinking about this.
I hope it gets better.

A small piece of cotton cloth ( sterile ) would probably do the same thing.

Maybe, but how to fix it in its place?
I'm not sure anyway.

A small peice of tape around the toe.
Thanx Miller, bluestblue and bella dea,it looks much better today.Have not put anything in at the cuticle in case of infection.Just gently pulling the cuticle back each day when I change the dressing. Also using anti bacteria cream.Definitely healing.
Be sure your hands are clean, each time you work on your toe.
To Miller and any others who helped.Thanx for all ypur advice.Toe healing, very clean and dried up.Still keeping it sterile and free from germs.Just waiting for the new toenail to appear.
That will take time, so please be patient.
