@hamburger,
Thank you, hamburger.

I'm going to write "boerenkool" in a piece of paper & scan the imported green shelves of my local deli! I never know what I'll find there! Smile

we have a ton of kale growing and as hamburger said, wait till after a frost. Then pick it and serve witha sweet and sour hot bacon dressing. That kills.

Also HBG, we have a deuce of a time finding thatKUHNE's Rotkhol. We found about 6 jars in a LOWFOOD in ST STephen this year , so we smuggled it over the border in laundry bags. It is sooo good as a side when we serve hamhocks or kielbasi . Jever notice that theyve figured out how to package 3 pounds of rotkhol into a 1 pound jar?

@msolga,
Check these out. Not sure what area of Oz you are in. I think this guy is in the West. You might also be able to email him for a market source for kale.

http://www.abc.net.au/gardening/stories/s2252904.htm

This page has videos of how he prepared the beds, planted and then harvested the kale.

@farmerman,
Smackaroons are good stuff. Are you going to fancy them up a bit by dipping them in chocolate?

Surprised Amazing. Please read my sig line below this post. That craggy fellow in the photograph (from the link you provided) is "he"! And it does not surprise me in the slightests that manure is the key. According to Peter, manure is the answer to just about everything in the garden! He practically drools when he discusses the virtues of manure! Wink Laughing

Thank you very much for posting those links. You've inspired me to give this kale growing idea some serious consideration. (But hey, what a small world!)

@msolga,
Huh. Had to change my settings so I can see it (I have signature display turned off). Interesting. He sounds quite a capable gardener and looks extremely young for his age.

Small world indeed, especially where racists and manure "hang out." Wink

@msolga,
Late here, but if nothing else, kale is pretty in the garden.

Sweet Killer of Manila!!

I thought I just spotted red cabbage earlier! It looks as though this thread has moved into the 'experimental cookery' area. Do we have a supply of Death-Row prisoners willing to volunteer to eat stuff like kale, red cabbage and that Crap ala Boer'? I understand that the German 5th Army was trapped in Stalingrad for 5 months with only red cabbage to eat - after liberation the Soviets found a lot of well-nibbled rat-bones and that mound of cabbage, untouched!!

@Butrflynet,
CHOCOLATE AGGGHHHH. Chocolate is like the expletive "****", when used in small amounts in appropraite foods, its good. However, used often and in everything, it loses any cred.
Macaroons should taste like coconut, not chocolate.

Im not done baking yet, I only made about 10 dozen yesterday. Thats barely enough to keep Christmas raiding parties satisfied

FM, did you ever get a good macaroon recipe? I've gone one, using 2 2/3 c. coconut, 2/3 c. Eagle's Condensed Milk and 1 tsp vanilla. That's it, I believe. No, I see 3/4 tsp almond extract, too. Bake at 350F for 8 - 10 minutes.

@farmerman,
Farmerman,

Since we don't have PMs and no one seems to have your email address, I'm leaving some breadcrumbs in the threads where you've been most recently posting. Hopefully you'll return to them soon and find that Bob and Diane are requesting a telephone call with you. Details are here:

The 8-10 minutes is for the delivery of the pizzas. The 'macroons' can be safely ditched in the nearest bin by then.

@Mr Stillwater,
What's your problemo, stilly? coconut, vanilla, or sugar plotzed milk?

(I'm thinking of playing with the recipe, as I like macaroons...)

Coconut. Possibly a non-food. And how does one obtain milk from an Eagle?

@Mr Stillwater,
I use sweetened condensed milk something like once every 15 years, but I might go for it to get macaroons. Actually, I bought some this afternoon. So there.

Tell me about your abhorrence of coconuts - or maybe, of their processing...
