Baldimo, our childrens' children will have a bigger problem than we have now in terms of the illegal alien growth in this country. Some say it could reach 400 million in the year 2050. Shocked

If you have a few minutes, check this video out and you will be shocked.

Only those who don't know anything about the situation in question could possibly make such a claim.

I think he was refering to the total population of the US. With our current immigration situation it is very possible to have such a population in that amount of time.

We currently have some where between 10-20 illegal aliens in the US. We didn't have any where near that many in 86 when Reagan gave amnesty. If we make another bone headed move on the immigration situation it very well could lead to 100 million illegal aliens in 50 years.

I'd thought, you must know before going to an ESL class...which are filled with illegals by the way.

Well, I know, it's quite easy to laugh about my typos, especially when I write in a foreign language.

But 50 years ago we didn't learn Enghlish in kindergarten as it is taught nowadays - though I've learnt Latin, English and French at grammar school, similar to you, McG.

Jeremiah, the fact that you live in an apartment building with all these "illegal" aliens tells us all we need to know about your socio-economic position. Dare I say move........................?

I agree this interpretation makes the scenario much more likely, but it also makes it a lot less threatening. A US population of 400 million in 2050 -- so what?

Well, we're at 300 million right now, and we can't have the other 100 million being brown-skinned people, Thomas. They'll throw off the mojo of the place, apparently.

Your apparent attempt to make this a racial issue is laughable. The fact that we can't care for all the people who are here in the US now whether they be citizens, illegal or legal aliens is the root issue here for the future. If all the immigration that took place was legal immigration then a vast majority of the people would support it. That isn't the way it is though. To say that immigration is just about race is short sighted and shows your political bias!

The newly elected MA governor just said he is going to rescind a pact that would allow state troopers to arrest illegal aliens and seek deportation.

Now that is just stupid.

Hmm, I'd say it is about half and half. For many people it certainly is about race and culture.

If it wasn't, why the push for the primacy of English? Why the complaints about documents printed in Spanish? The amount of money they cost is trivial, so I feel there are probably deeper reasons which have to do with race and culture.

It isn't just about race, but it is a large component of it.

From which aspect are they coming from? I know for me it is about protecting American culture. I know we have a mixture of cultures here and we add each new one to our own collective culture. The problem arrises when outside cultures start demanding that we change our culture to accept them without them having to accept our own. Look at the story I posted a few weeks ago about the kids on the bus. Because there was some Hmong families they created their own "academy" for their children so that they could teach the children about the Hmong culture. Well thats fine and dandy if this is a private school but I don't think it is because they are using public school buses for get the kids to school and back home. Last I checked this was the US and in our schools we taught American history and culture. How are these kids going to do when they go to college? Are they going to demand classes at the college about their culture and then know nothing about the US history and culture?

If religion can only be taught in the home then why can't people's native culture be taught the same way. Let the parents teach about the old country and let the schools teach about their new one.

The push for english is because we live in the US and that is what speak here. Do you speak a language other then english? I know I don't but I wish I did. If I did I still would think english should be the offical language of the US. Thats because I'm an American. If people moving here don't like it, we aren't forcing them to stay. Last I checked this country belonged to us Americans.

You say the cost is trivial but can you tell me how much money is spent printing offical govt documents in forgein tongues?

I will disagree with you. I for instance want illegals thrown out regardless of where they are from. We have illegal immigrants here from the EU as well as others that don't have white people who live there. China, South America, Mexico, the Middle East. As far as I care, they can all be sent away if they are illegal. It just happens that the largest group of illegals is brown and happen to be from a country that is bordering ours, that doesn't mean people hate mexicans, it just means they are tired of the mexican encourging their people to leave and come here and when they get to the states, the illegals will complain about being targeted when it is them that put themselves in the way of being targeted.

No, we live in the US and we speak a wide variety of languages here.

My statement is far more accurate than yours. Hell, we have spanish TV - obviously spanish is spoken here as well. There really is no reason to push for an 'official' language other than to assert primacy, something which is unnecessary unless you believe English to be superior to other dialects.

Your statement is only partialy correct. When polled English is spoken by a vast vast vast majority of the US population. If the poll was done of citizens only then I'm willing to bet that over 90% of the population speak english. I would call that a strong majority. If you have other data or a better idea of what the data would be then please post it.

The TV channels that put out broadcasting in languages other then english are owned by private companies and not the govt. When you turn on your TV how many of the channels are in spanish? Once again there will be some but they won't be many because the majority of people in the US speak English and not another language.

I don't disagree with any of this. But I don't see what the utility of declaring English the 'official' language is. It doesn't seem to add any value to the US to do so.

I don't mean to imply that you have any racist or culturist feelings - I haven't seen any evidence that you do. But you must realize that your position is going to be lumped in with theirs, because you are in an unspoken alliance with those who do have those feelings. That's why I - as someone who wants the border closed immediately - feel it is important to keep our arguments from straying into dangerous territory where such accusations can gain traction.
