What type of Eugenics do you support?

I have been reading up on Eugenics lately and have come to a conclusion. It doesn't sound all that bad a way to plan for the future of humanity.

I'm not talking about a Nazi type Eugenics but based purely on the best traits. I don't care who these traits come from as long as the traits are those which push the human race to the next level.

Which traits from which groups should we choose?

I for sure don't want anything that is forced on us by gov't, we already have too much of that, IMO.
I'm for what we are supposed to be, a representative democracy, not socialism.

I think that Eugenics has been wholly discredited and would not supported ANY policy or decisions made using it as a basis.

Selective breeding is the way to go. (Hat tip Niven)

Everyone is allowed to have one child to replace themselves.

Therefore a couple is allowed two children.

We allow those who have certain genes we desire - perfect teeth, high intelligence, strength, imagination - to have an extra kid. This slight increase allows Darwinian actions to come to play once again for Humanity: those who are better suited really will have a higher rate of reproductivity.

We run a lottery for extra kids as well... start breeding for luck too.

In 6-8 generations, I have no doubt we would see positive differences with very little downside. I think those people who don't want to have kids could sell their rights to other couples who wish more (free market!)

So you don't think it is possible to breed better intelligence or physical strength into the human race? It works for horses and dogs just to name a few. I'm not talking about humans having certificates or papers like a dog for a pedigree or anything.

I'm just asking you if you think it is possible or not.

Possible, yes. Moral? I don't think so. Dangerous? Yes. Impossible to implement without a form of government that none of us would enjoy living under? Yes.

FD, you honestly don't think we will have some sort of breeding progam in place during our lifetimes - even if it is just to control population growth and nothing else?

I kind of take that for granted...

Well, I don't doubt that YOU (= in the USA) something like that will happen.

Perhaps even in MY lifetime.

But I sincerely doubt that for other countries, especially those with a Christian background - like most in Europe.

I believe we will have the opportunity for individuals to genetically alter or plan their own offspring according to the traits that they find desirable. To a certain extent, we've always done this when choosing our mates anyway. What I don't think SHOULD happen (would is another question) is that this should be some sort of top down program where the government tells us how many and what kind of children we can have, or worse yet, prevents us from having children naturally at all.

Interesting that you don't consider the US to have a 'Christian background.'

Our religious nuts here are at least as nutty as your nuts, if not nuttier nuts, so it's hard to believe that the same objections wouldn't be issued here, as there, if that is an issue.

You mean Gattaca? Seen it. And if you don't think things are headed that way, you're crazy! With small tech. advances, we have everything they had in that movie.

Fighting against Genetic Discrimination will be one of the great struggles in the next 50-100 years. And I'm not even 100% sure which side I'm on; it depends on one's point of view...

I agree with you. In fact I would prefer that it were not a govt program. If we were to implement some sort of Eugenics program it should be done in the private sector with limited govt intervention. The govt would be in place to make sure that nothing along the lines of a Nazi program would take place. I don't think any one group be it whites, blacks, browns or yellows are superior then another, but they do have different abilities for each group.

Any combination of DNA is already so incredibly unlikely.

If such topic comes up, at once "the two big volks-churches" (= the Cathoilc and Protestant) will be there as well.

And since the Christian Democrats/Christian Social Union (our conservatives) even have 'Christian' in their party names ...

No, I don't think this will be possible here in Germany for .... let's say two generations at least.

And I sincerely doubt that ethic commissions in other European countries will be a lot faster accepting such.

As there seems to be plenty of DNA out there in a wide variety of combinations, I would have to disagree with you on this one.

2 generation is what, 30 years? That's not long, certainly well within my lifetime.

I believe that much of this question relies upon just how big the population numbers get over the next few decades. Both Europe and the US have seen slow growth (which is nice) but transitions to faster growth patterns could really have disastrous results - overcrowding, lack of potable water and food, heat pollution etc.

Wait until it starts getting crowded - and like the Righties like to scream, it is going to be Muslims and Mexicans crowding everyone else since their familial breeding patterns are more prolific in the long run. I think many insultated European socieites will think a little differently about breeding once that specter starts shoving itself down people's throats.
