@Region Philbis,
Must obtain new shovel today. Old shovel is veteran of many wars, but was not built for the long haul...

@George,
I so would. I LIKE shoveling, and I love snow.

Meanwhile, yesterday broke a record in Columbus for rainfall.

Rainfall.

Bah, humbug.

(It's properly cold now but no precipitation forecast. Hmph.)

@Region Philbis,
Yep.

Blue Hill should be us. 9", see: http://www.wunderground.com/StateSnowDepth.asp?state=MA
Another 1 - 3" expected today.
Another 3 - 6" Sunday but then a mix so it may be less.

Snow was, where I had shoveled yesterday, up to my calves.

I shoveled earlier with my housemate - didn't take too long. But, while thesnow was dry and light as it fell, the bottom layers are starting to melt and it's getting heavier. My car's still burried though.

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr73/djjd1962/100_0469.jpg

about another 4 inches in the next 24 hours

where the wind could get at the snow and blow it around we've got 3 foot high drifts

@djjd62,
Have obtained new shovel. It's a revelation. For years I thought I was a using a proper snow shovel. I was wrong.

Piles at the corners of the driveway are up to my chest (or about the top of ehbeth's head) now. Backing out is suddenly an exercise in faith.

Does winter begin tomorrow or Monday?

@mac11,
Should make for a great NFL game tomorrow: Arizona @ NE. Cold, snowy and windy.

Clive, Nigel and I got us shoveled out in about two hours.
While we were at it, we did our elderly neighbor Anna's as well.

Young Mark, our neighbor on the other side, showed up with a
snowblower and helped us with Anna's. Mark was a first-class
pain in the ass as a teenager, but he's grown into pretty a good guy.

I looked at the piles of snow on our front lawn. They were huge.
"Where we gonna put Sunday's?" I asked Nigel.

"If we get much more than this, we're gonna have to put it in the house."

our first winter here ('95-'96) was by far the worst.

@Region Philbis,
The dog park we go to is next to some tennis courts. They share a parking lot. Since the tennis courts aren't in use in the winter, the city piles excess snow in the lot.

Last year was the snowiest on record for Madison. The parking lot turned into an ice-snow labyrinth, snow piled as high at least 8 feet high.

We're getting more as I type. Thinking of piling up snow around the patio and building a big fire in the middle -- hot boozy drinks, snow, stars; good times.

@George,
I'll be there with bells on!

Good news (for me) is that white stuff is coming down. Bad news is that it's more sleet than snow, but I remain hopeful. Especially since my refrigerator is freshly stocked, I did the last of my Christmas shopping today, and the kid is on winter break.

I just want to retain my power, if that's not too much to ask. I'm thrilled to bits if I'm surrounded by snow so long as my house is warm.

@patiodog,
I saw that Evil or Very Mad

ok, I had to get on a ladder, but I saw that

I spent a good (?) part of the morning shovelling out a platform for tomorrow's snow. If it gets too crazy, I'll go up on the tiny front yard patch, where we stash the snow, and shovel it between our house and Miss Rita's. Snow makes a fine insulation.

@ehBeth,
Funny you should mention that. I was just noticing that since the snow got above floor level at the front of the house, our usually drafty freezing entryway is a lot warmer.
