BOTTOM LINE:
The reason why many of the poor remain poor is because some are worthless scumbags who want to reach into everyone else's pocket and get a free ride through life.
BUT a huge number of the people who remain poor are in that predicament because of things way, way beyond their control and ability to change. They are people who want desperately to be more productive; to be more competetive; and to enjoy more of the fruits of our society -- but who simply do not have the intellectual, physical, and psychological wherewithal to do so.
If you choose to concentrate on the former -- so be it. It is a free country.
I choose to concentrate on the latter -- and I choose to think that government can set the safety net more appropriately than other suggested providers.
If you choose to be so concerned to eliminate the former that you can look aside when restrictions hurt the latter -- so be it. It is a free country.
I choose to be concerned enough about the latter to allow some of the former to "get away with things" rather than allowing any of the latter to fall through the net.
And insofar as I can persuade people to my way of thinking on this issue -- I will.

Not you, Frank.
As usual, back on Abuzz or here -- I'm in total agreement with Frank Apisa's analysis and philosophy. The constricted and over wrought philosophies of the politico-heads mostly bore me stiff.
Thanks LW.
Keep fightin' the good fight.
