I believe when the U.S. pulled out of Iraq at the end of the Gulf War, Saddam Hussein then murdered all the Iraqis who had supported the U.S.
How many people did Saddam kill in that purge? Thousands? Tens of thousands? Is it knowable?
Probably depends upon how difficult it would be to determine whether a person was a bombing casualty or murder victim.
Basra went through the mill big time, that's for sure.
I think you are referring to the uprisings in 1991 after the US coalition pulled out and the US urged Iraqis to rise up.
This from wikipedia
Quote:
In April 1991, after Saddam lost control of Kuwait in the Gulf War, he cracked down ruthlessly against uprisings in the Kurdish north and the Shia south. His forces committed wholesale massacres and other gross human rights violations against both groups similar to the violations mentioned before. Estimates of deaths during that time range from 40,000 to 100,000 for Kurds, and 60,000 to 130,000 for Shi'ites.
There probably can never be a true accounting. The mass graves have proven to hold a lot less than what was claimed.
