Letty: In this case, "is" is called a linking verb, i.e. it connects the pronoun after it with the subject of the sentence. They are one and the same. I, frankly, think that usage is a little stilted, but it really is the purist form of grammar.

Well, JTT, you and I both know how to write a formal paper, and how to NOT do the stilted stuff. Smooth communication is what everyone is after, and you are spot on about English grammar coming from Latin. That splitting the infinitive thing is such a crock.
