Big Brother's Watching You

Only in this case, it's not the government, but rather, your employer.

Today at work, one of my co-workers said, "Look at this, Stray Cat," and proceeded to click on a non-descript looking icon at the bottom of our computer screens. (We have several icons at the bottom of our screen, shortcuts we can use to access one program or another. I'd never really noticed this one particular icon that was at the far right of the screen.)

Well, up pops this window that says, "Tracking System." The system was inaccessible without a password, though.

"They're watching what we're looking at on the computer," my co-worker said, rolling her eyes.

I wasn't really surprised. I'm aware that most companies today do this sort of tracking.

That's why I rarely post here while I'm at work, and on the rare occasion that I do, I make sure it's on my lunch hour or right at the end of the day.

I also regularly delete all cookies (though I don't know how much that helps) because I really don't want to explain to HR that on a little corner of the internet, I lead a sort of double life where I go by the name of Stray Cat.

To be honest, I can understand the viewpoint of the employers. They simply want to make sure that people aren't screwing around on the internet all day when they're supposed to be working.

Still, there's something kind of creepy about it....I mean, who exactly is watching? Is it the HR dept? Is the president of the company sitting in his extra large office, up in the clouds, watching all of us, all god-like?

Even though I knew they were probably tracking our internet activity, seeing that "Tracking System" thingy today kind of freaked me out. It was jarring enough that I know I'm going to be even more circumspect about using the computer for anything other than business from now on.

I've noticed that some of you here post throughout the day, I assume even while you're at work. Do you ever worry that your employers may be watching your activity -- and might call you on it?

Do you think employers have the right to do this?

Some tracking software copies all key strokes as well.

So it isnt always 100% internet use that is copied.

They can watch you while you fill out a spread sheet.
See your errors
see your progress
watch you create folders
see wich accounts ( if they are divided) gets more attention.
THAT ^ can be a way to charge the clients more if thier accounts take more of YOUR time..

but

yeah

creepy none the less

(shudder)

now..

I don't believe that Stray Cat is your name in real life. I think your name is something like Betty Hodgkins.

I can see both sides.

You're certainly entitled to do whatever you want on your own time and with your own equipment. But on the other hand, if you're using the company's equipment to waste time that you're being paid for, I think they have a right to object. I'd put it in the same category with making too many personal telephone calls on company time. A few minutes here and there is one thing, but some people will abuse the privilege.

FYI, I am my own employer, and I have given myself permission to be here. Laughing

Ok, so the truth is, my co-worker said, "Betty Hodgkins, look at this icon!"

I just realized something else. At work, they have little cameras placed at strategic points throughout the building. I've heard this is also commonplace these days, especially at large companies (the smaller ones might not be able to afford it).

I'm sure the employers would say it's for security purposes, and I'm sure it is -- but -- man! With the cameras and the tracking systems, it's starting to feel kinda George Orwell out there!

You really have to watch your P's and Q's these days.

Me too, Eva. Still, I can't help wondering exactly who's getting this info, and what they're making of it.

I picture someone sitting in an office, looking at a tracking report and saying, "It looks like Betty Hodgkins was looking at a site called A2K today. What exactly is that? And why is she calling herself "Stray Cat?" Is that some kind of code name? Maybe we should look into this......"

It's kind of hard to describe, Chai. It just looks like a small swirly thing. I never really noticed it until my co-worker pointed it out. Confused

In this day of political correctness, is this the right term anymore?

Shouldn't it be something like, "Big Person's Watching You!", or something equally idiotic? Laughing
