This is the Pentagon's idea of a morale booster for deployed soldiers' families - from-the-waist-up cardboard cutouts of "daddy" to tote around...
I thought it was from the Onion, or some other satire, but eveidently its for real...

Oh, brother! Aren't you glad to serve under such imaginative leaders?
Well, can they drive in the HOV lane with 'em?
Haven't military families always toted pictures of their missing warrior to events?
Not everyone is good with words--perhaps Flat Daddies help inarticulate mommies to explain love-from-a-distance?
There was a Flat Daddy on an episode of Trading Spaces sometime in the past 12 months.
Made me feel somewhat uneasy watching, but what was important (IMHO) was that the kids in the family liked having him around for photos.
I suppose how much of a replacement a flat daddy is depends on the original.....
ehBeth has a good point. The children of Flat Daddies have been told what important, patriotic work their fathers are doing overseas. Having a Flat Daddy at a soccer game is a way of bragging, "My dad would be here if he could be here."
Personally, as a mother, I think I'd feel melodramatic unloading Flat Daddy at kids events, but if Flat Daddy helped my kids cope, I'd do it.
I have a flat capybara I tote with me when I'm out of town. Not the real thing, but it puts my mind at ease.
Re: I thought it was a Joke! Flat Daddies!!
That is the only original thought that has come from george bu$h since he seized office. Can't you tell?
His Daddy wasn't around when growing up. Daddy was too busy infiltrating the US Government so Georgy Porgy Boy made u[p a flat daddy.
