JLN, Unfortunately, many religious people believe in those values of soul, heaven and hell while treating their brothers and sisters with disdain. c.i.

Yes, and it's also unfortunate that many people spend inordinate amounts of time and energy slamming organized religion in weak attempts to elevate their perception of their own relative "righteousness".

This happens so often. I want to help one I consider blind to the progression of the Insult, to see where it started.

c.i.'s observation was general. snood, yours seemed directly at c.i. This is where the Personal Insult started, even though you didn't name him. This happens a lot. Thought I would show you. Maybe you don't recognise it.

Okay - I'll admit my response was directed at c.i.'s comments. And I'll take the responsibility for making it more personal than necessary. On the other hand, I'll stand by the sentiments of my post - that, just as some people in organized religions are two-faced, some people slam religion in an attempt to feel better about themselves.

Oh, and Sofia - thanks for being so "helpful". Seems I can count on you alot lately to point out where I'm wrong.

Why does it have to be to "make them feel better about themselves"?

Why can't it just be because of the low opinion they have for religious notions?

Thank you for that question, Craven.

It is a fair one to ask.

snood, You couldn't be more wrong; all my siblings are christians. I just don't happen to believe as they do. Feel better about myself? I doubt it. In some issues, we agree to disagree. Feeling better has nothing to do with it. c.i.

Okay, I'll try this one more time. I believe that some people slam organized religion because, by doing so, by always finding the "hypocrites" or other lowlifes among those who practice organized religion, they validate whatever their own morality, or lack of it, and thereby "make themselves feel better". C.I., as you told me, if the shoe doesn't fit, then you (and your family) shouldn't wear it.

And Frank - IT IS MY OPINION. As such, there is no "should" or "shouldn't" about it.

Agree - disagree, whatever. But don't try to put words in my mouth.

Gosh, Snood, you were doing so well pretending to be enjoying all this. Kinda blew a gasket, didn't ya?

I have no idea of what you are talking about here. Try to at least give a hint of what you are referencing when you rant.

snood, I'll try one more time too! Your words "hypocrites and lowlifes" were not used by me; it was your words. Are you trying to validate something here? c.i.

Damn, c.i.! We just have our own opinions, and they ain't the same! I know they weren't your words! They were mine, and I claim 'em! Do you think you can just leave it alone now?

I denied Jesus even though I loved God. My best friend tried to witness to me and I would say, "I don't want to hear." But at 16 I fully realized Jesus' role and the crucifixion. I was saved and felt saved. I started to read the Bible and am still reading. The Holy Spirit is the witness to me that I am saved and I have spoken in tongues just 6 months ago, which is another witness to me from God

That's right, Snood. If we were to count the number of times they self-righteously use the word "hypocrite" to refer to organized religion... and how easily forget about their own hypocrisies...

We're all hypocrites insofar as we fail to live up to our own moral standards.

The point is to struggle to be a better person. And a person who really struggles is not judgmental about the shortcomings of others.

Christianity, Judaism, Islam, or Secular Humanism are not true or false because their followers fail to live up to their own standards. To use the "sins" of a group as a proof of their falsehood is the most clueless type of self-righteousness.

Thankfuly there is just falsehood plain andsimple to work with and the use of sin to imply that is wholly uneccessary.

Existentialism anyone?

It's scary to me - people so smart they don't need God. But that's just me - weak old me, leaning on my crutch. I don't want them to let that bother them, or impede their... reasoning among themselves.

Yeah, like the guru of existentialist atheism, Jean Paul Sartre. In his deathbed converted to Christianity... Easy to be cocky about life, death, and the universe. Until Mr. Death knocks on your door...

Are you conceding that many believe due to a fear of death and the unknown? That's the greatest indictment of religion that there is. That it is an effort to grant one's self immortality.
