The growth of the British Empire in the early 18th century, to its peak in the 1920s, saw the UK acquire over one quarter of the world's land mass, ... ...

Oh, you perhaps didn't mean it that way

Put some ice on it, elevate it, and take a couple aspirin - it'll be better by morning.

Ellpus: You obviously require more 'open' support from me... So here you have it: In all our conversations over the past two years (nearly three) I have a strong affectionate bond with you, you are kind and compassionate, witty and charming, and a true friend.

The qualities of kindness, compassion and charm can only properly be quantified under pressure and under a faint pressure they have been shown to be in short supply. It seems they only show when things are going along in the manner approved of and soon disappear otherwise.

I think nearly everyone is kind and compassionate and charming with the small talk in operation. During that social dance one sees at weddings, when people who hardly know each other gather together etc, kindness, compassion and charm are put forth as a form of polite strategy which garuantees they part later still not knowing each other.

We have discovered just how thin this veneer is in Ellpus's case. Read his comments. The conclusion is self evident- for him to maintain his kindness, compassion and charm it is absolutely necessary not to ruffle his feathers even slightly. Any truth that doesn't have his approval is thus rendered off limits and when one does the effect is quite alarming and best known about in advance of any deeper arrangements. Had he been subjected to the abuse I have been on wande's thread, which timber will verify, one assumes he would have had an apoplectic rage.

So mind how you go. And he has threatened violence.

I've just been reading through this thread and it seems to have been quite "lively", to say the least.

Would someone bring this gentleman a drink.

Um, why?

Well- it was just my low key way of saying that I found your first contribution agreeable. I'm sorry if any other impression was created.

afternoon MacT

I put Sunday's dreadful, almost embarrassing perfomance (and I'm not refering to participants on this thread) down to us having that ding dong with Celtic the previous Wednesday. Although it nearly kills me to say it, Arsenal put up a creditable performance.

Mac-

Where's Clary. The Trivia threads lose a little sparkle in her absence. If you see her tell her that from me.

Very magnanimous of you.

I didn't actually see the game live but caught a replay of the last 15 minutes last night. Arsenal definitely seemed fresher and with more ideas than Man U.

I'm actively not going to start on the name calling in this thread. Enough has been done already and those who I know and like can be confident that the latter is unchanged.

Welcome back, LE. It's a pleasure knowing you. I recall one of your first absences from A2K and how concerned we all were for your well-being. You were experiencing some issues from your Crohn's disease, although we didn't know it at the time. There was genuine relief when you returned. Few people have a genuine impact on others in the cyber world. You, sir, are one of those few.

I'm glad you returned.

Thanks, LE, for coming back.

I would be desolate here without your comments. (Well, nearly - or if you change your support towards a different football club ... ?)

It's a darn shame that such a nice person like Lord Ellpus feels compelled to bare his soul, so that a bloke like spendius would finally quit harassing
him.

I hope this will be enough for spendius and that he truly feels remorseful
and apologetic.

Lord Ellpus-

I'm sorry mate. I self-evidently misunderstood the nature of the thread.

I thought it was a bit like a free-for-all round the bar.

Best wishes.

I never went anywhere near harassing His Lordship. It was his thread persona that I was dealing with.

What you see in my posts is what I'm like and if it's too much for you -tough.

How do you know whether Lord Ellpus, or any of us, is a "nice bloke" or not. He's a bloke first. The "nice" is to suit your own purposes. What's a "nice bloke"? How about all those insensitive building workers and engineers and truck drivers and nurses etc etc and researchers who provided the facilities for his care and recovery. Are they "nice blokes"? I know a good few and they are just like me. I drink with them every night of the week. Modern medical care doesn't grow on trees for pratts like you to patronise and indulge your passing sentiments on. It has to be carved out of the substance of the earth with hard work and talent. It was hardly even there 100 years ago and we've had major wars to deal with as we went along.

And what's a "bloke like spendius"? If you thought I was "nice" I'd go jump off a cliff.

This is a British thread. Go read your Ladies journals. Get your pro-abortion arguments refined. Help kill some more defenceless little lives.

Is that the end of the matter then?

Thank you gentlemen!

I have been working away today, sorry I missed all the weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth. You were treated well in the hospital LE, hope you make a 100% recovery old lad.

Apparently there has been a Military Coup in Thailand, I heard a few whispers about the possibility of such an event a few weeks ago. It appears to be a peaceful takeover, a Thai Army Military spokesman has stated that the country's constitution is now revoked. The PM is apparently in New York. The corruption in the Thai government of late especially has been ludicrous. It is a very beautiful country Thailand, I hope the image is not marred by any violence or confrontations on the streets. No doubt the next 24 hours will be critical in developments.

Serious **** this Spendi, you haven't paid for two tickets out there for January!

Hotels booked, car hire reservation, accommodation reserved for Bangkok and Khao Lak. Party at Gullivers arranged for the 14th January next. A few mates arranged to meet up with on 12th of January at 2pm in the lobby bar of the Montien Hotel. You'll be lay on your sofa watching cricket all the way from Australia, not a care in the world eh lad? Aren't you the lucky one.

I might be dodging bullets, jumping over land mines and back-handing the Thai army to get to Mae Sot.

Then there are the good points;- Remember every cloud has a silver lining.

The coup will devalue the baht.
Accommodation prices will tumble to zilch
Restaurants will be dropping their prices
Antique prices will tumble
Foreigners to the country will be selling off their condo's cheaply.

Car and motorcycle hire will be a pittance.
Tailors will be running up flash suits in the best material at £30.00 a throw.
Hiring a longtail on the Chao Pryha River will be down to a hundred baht for two hours.
Monsoon season is coming to an end.

We haven't got time to be falling out.
