You did misread me. I dont think the US invaded Iraq to steal oil. But i do think a central plank in the scheme of things was to control oil supply not only from Iraq but as a consequence of being in Iraq from the wider middle east as well. Also to make sure it was priced in dollars not euros.

I don't disagree. It was your "ordinary people of the middle east" wanting to "share in the oil wealth beneath their feet" comment that threw me.

Mornin' everyone...

(smorgs calls in on her way to the kitchen, to get a bucket, a Resolve and a gin and tonic)

We couldn't smoke! So everyone was crowded into an upstairs room (even the nons) and no-one was dancing to Band Of Gold! Then when there was still no-one up when Jimmy Mack came on, they put out ashtrays - and low and behold; the place was steamin'

The place was great - all marbel floors and brass things.

Buffet was nice, the usual suspects... loads of egg butties left over (no pork pies though).

No-one can party like Civil Servants!

I came home in a sparkly Santa Hat and inflamed lobes from my £1.99 earings.

OK, you can go back to discussing that Saudi thingy...

...don't just stroll in here, acting all nonchalant , DP

Even I know we've buggered The Ashes, and I know nowt about cricket.

Although 'the thwack of willow on leather' does sound very erotic...

Well daddyo-

I can talk cricket with anybody but if you want to do some we are better than you so there mnuurrh stuff forget it.

That can be done with marbles like that load of hysterical English "cricket fans" who crawled out of the woodwork when we took the Ashes did. They are not cricket lovers. They just want to be on the side that's winning.

Great cricket knows not jingoism. I'll be watching South Africa and India most of the day.

Gilchrist's second fifty was fantastic hitting but it was just hitting. What on earth caused him not to get the fastest ever century when he only needed 11 off 7 to do it in those circumstances. The dressing room missed a trick there surely. Sir Viv Richard's record has stood for 20 years. He had tired and disheartened bowlers, his eye in and a declaration was in the offing. There was no downside to taking risks. He must not have known. Runs didn't matter much. Warne and Lee could have easy put another 30 on if they were needed and what's another Gilchrist century compared to being top of a list in Wisden maybe forever like Sir Don Bradman will always be.

Did he really not know? Ponting should be put in the stocks if he didn't.

you make a good point here Spendy. We "enjoy" a high standard of living, but think nothing of it. I read somewhere that it takes as much energy to fly a 747 load of tourists from the US to Egypt as it took to build the pyramids in the first place.

Well considering energy policy, middle east oil, SFO is all very depressing.

I went to a birthday bash round my local last night. (Landlords birthday...ticket only...I got two so I went twice)

One of the birthday cards featured a wild eyed football supporter shouting at his mate on the terrace

"Football is fantastic. I love everything about it. The grass the dirt the smell of leather...and thats only the pies!".

Made me smile anyway.

Made me laugh Steve.

Did you see Mr Blair justifying the decision the Attorney General admitted being "uncomfortable with"?

After the cherries were listed he then said that there was nothing to be gained from it anyway.

As if having clean hands is a thing of the past. Not a priority anymore. And top down example. What a message eh?

No I didnt see the Beloved Leader. Guardian says it may go to judicial review. Lets hope so. Off now to watch live tv football courtesy of some Arab station. The burkha ads are the best.

The willow and the leather presumably less significant that the "thwack".

Even when it is only typed. Actually hearing it must be really erotic then.

Eh-eh? A psychologist might conclude that you would like to do a bit of thwacking on your own account.

Most women I've asked are like that. When asked who they would choose to be the thwacked John Major and Prince Charles were the favourites.

Well Portsmouth nearly thwhthwaccked Arsenal. Until the gunners scored two goals.

Most people round the pub look a bit bleary eyed. Busty barmaid (and grandmother) left the party at 7.30 am, then came back cleared up and is serving pints now. Mark the guvnor and his oppo went off for breakfast at 8.30...never to be seen again.

Mornin' all! Very Happy

I was talking to my brother yesterday, about A2K - just came up, I told him that I had posted that I was suffering from a hangover. He said I shouldn't post that on a predominantly American site as the Yanks were 'funny' about alcohol consumption.

He's visited The States and noticed service staff (particularly) in restaurants, could be quite 'sniffy' about about what they would consider to be excess alcohol ordering.

He also said that woman who drank (like me) were considered "of loose character and easy virtue" (he's gay - so he uses phrases like that).

Now y'all know me...

I don't drink regularly, I've drunk this year more than ever as I've been going out socially more than usual. But I wouldn't call myself even a regular drinker! If they are so conservative about alcohol... why are they? Is it a legacy of prohibition?

No offense, but I think your brother is really clueless about American alcohol consumption.

Those bartenders aren't being sniffy about the general consumption of alcohol. They are being sniffy about the levels of intoxication.

It doesn't matter if you give the alcohol away or sell it, anyone who has control over the facility or the event can be liable. The bar has a legal responsibility not to allow customers to leave drunk, and instead of serving drunk customers, to cut them off.

All but four states have laws that impose liability on commercial servers of alcohol for the damages caused by intoxicated persons to themselves or to third parties.

No offence taken, Tico

Thanks for the info ButrFN - I don't think licencees have that kind of liability here in Blighty.

Cary, is it your Birthday? If so, Big Happy Birthday to you! xxx

Where is everybody today?

Actually, I think there IS something in our licensing laws that says a Licensee should not serve someone who appears to be intoxicated.
If they do, then their license could be at risk.

Happy birthday, Clary.
