I am 54 years of age. I have always had a normal memory until now. I now find that when I'm think about something it will suddenly slip out of my mind. Is there some type of doctor or other specialist I can go to who can diagnose or treat this condition?

This is a very common occurrence, known "lovingly" as a "senior moment". As we age, our ability to retrieve a formerly known fact or word becomes increasingly more difficult.

For most people, this is a normal part of aging, and is nothing to be concerned about. If in your case, the problem with memory has had an abrupt onset, or your memory has decreased markedly, you might want to check with a neurologist or geriatric psychiatrist. They can give you some tests to determine whether your problem is simply normal aging or something else.

If (and it is not very likely) you are experiencing the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, there are medications that can slow down the progress of the disease.

You might want to check this out:

First and foremost, please try not to worry. Anxiety itself can cause a person to become forgetful. Personally, I have been dealing with "senior moments" for a number of years, and simply live with it. If you get to know some of the other "elder statespersons" on A2K, you will find that we all have difficulty with memory.

It can be very distressing when one realizes that we are not as sharp as we were when we were younger. The less that a person makes of it, the easier that it is. Let us know how you are doing.
